    Eternal Mystery

    Well, well, well.
It looks like the mystery of the disappearing Restore Points will remain a mystery forever.
I am using Windows 10 on a desktpo pc.
I have reserved 59GB for the Restore Points.
However, all the Restore Points, both manual and automatically created ones would vanish the next day when I switch on the power and power up the pc.
I don't have that many Restore Points whether manual of automatic ones at any one time; just one or two manual ones and the same number of automatic ones.
The fact is that the Restore Points were shown to be in existence proved that they have been successfully created.
I have been hunting high and low for a solution, even in the Microsoft Community website without any success whatsoever!!!
Looks like this will be forever a mystery of the IT World.

    :)

  2. Pictures received through Comcast email.

Thank you for your response. I was unable to follow your instructions because I could get no action when I right-clicked on my desk top as instructed. Nothing happened at all, so I had no idea what to do next. If you have any further suggestions I would
be eternally grateful; if not, I thank you for your time—it's all a complete mystery to me.

Hi, have you seen this, for example? Do you have a 3rd party disk maintenance tool set to run automatically?
Solve the mystery of lost System Restore points | PCWorld
"I have Diskeeper 10, and it's set it to do automatic defragging, but that couldn't possibly be what’s eating up my restore points -- or could it? "

Could you have sthg similar going on?

This also relates, including ref. to 3rd party disk related progs if you read on.. with hints as to Event Ids if you need them..

    Then there's dual booting...

    Thanks for your reply.
Yes, I have tried Tom's Restore Point Creator.
Its sole purpose is to create Restore Points and I have created some Restore Points with it.
But it also disappeared the same way as those done by the Microsoft Restore Point creator.
As for the possibility of having the Restore Points deleted by a defrag program, I only recently installed Auslogic Disk Defrag program but the problem of my disappearing Restore Points started way before the installation.
    So, that couldn't be it.
What is really needed is a Restore Point program WITH the ability to protect the Restore Points created.

  7. In that case try something like Macrium Reflect Free

I wonder, if you use any cleaning software, some tend to delete old restore points.

Ccleaner can remove restore points but you have to actually tell it to do so, it won't do it on its own.

You don't need a program to do this.

Just run the powershell command Get-ComputerRestorePoint to see what you have; or Checkpoint-Computer if you want to make one.

The fact that upgrades turns off automatic restore points has been noted repeatedly on these forums.

No, I'm very chary of such software as it can also clean out the registry!
Especially now when the Restore Point also went on vaction!
The restore points being deleted were quite new, having been created about a few days ago.
This included both manual as well as automatically created ones by Microsoft when an update was being done.

The question is: Why should upgrades turn off automatic restore points or even delete them?
They were created automatically by Microsoft just in case something nasty turned up during the upgrades!
Doesn't that defeate the whole purpose of creating them in the first place?
In fact, I have posed such questions to the Microsoft Community website days ago and is still waiting for a reply!

Deleting the system restore points belonging to the previous Windows installation makes complete sense when a major upgrade (like 10586) or an in-place upgrade repair install is performed. They simply would not match the registry then in use.

As to MS's policy of disabling it- well, that tends to smack of (misplaced) optimism or an intention to deprecate this for some reason. Certainly confusing. Perhaps they intend people to rely instead on the at least equally confusingly named Backup and Restore (Windows 7) instead..
