Windows 10: Ethernet connection suddenly not working, showing as 'Unidentified Network'

After plugging in my ethernet cable today it has completely stopped working, and the connection is showing as 'Unidentified Network', no Internet.

I have tested on my laptop and it works perfectly so the cable is not at fault.

I tried the command ipconfig /release and then ipconfig /renew and it gave the error: "An error occurred while renewing interface Ethernet : unable to contact your DHCP server. Request has timed out."


Any help would be very appreciated.

Ethernet shows unidentified network, but internet works.


Strange issue that just started today. My Ethernet adapter shows unidentified network and none of my apps have internet access, however my web browsers work just fine. I am even making this post from the adapter that supposedly has no access. I have been searching around for a solution, but no problem seems similar to mine. Check out the screenshot below. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Ethernet - Unidentified Network

Hi All,

About 1 month ago I upgraded my Windows 7 Home Edition to Windows 10. Everything worked fine. However, yesterday, suddenly, when I turned on my computer, I didn't have a network connection anymore.

I use an ethernet cable to connect to my router.

When I connect to the router, first it takes about a minute showing "Identifying..." then, it switches to "Unidentified Network". I can't seem to fix the issue.

Here are the steps I already took:

- There is no problem with the router. WiFi works excellent, and when I connected another PC with an ethernet cable, it works as well. Only this computer doesn't work. To be sure it's not the Router, I restarted it a couple of times. -- Didn't work.

- There is no problem with the cable. I changed the cable -- Didn't work.

- I did the ipconfig /release -/flushdns -/renew -- Didn't work.

- I restarted the TCP Stack with netsh -- Didn't work.

- I disabled/enabled, even uninstalled and reinstalled the Network component -- Didn't work.

- I reinstalled the network driver -- Didn't work.

- I tried using Static IP Address instead of DHCP -- Didn't work.

- I disabled IPv6 -- Didn't work.

- I did couple of more things with netsh which I've found on the Internet -- Didn't work.

- I browsed and did everything I could find on the support Microsoft page about this problem that others have -- Didn't work.

- I even reset the Windows 10, keeping my files, and after it reinstalled -- Didn't work.

- I've tried enabling or disabling Authentication. When disabled, it shows "Unable to Authenticate" -- Didn't work.

When I plug in a WiFi USB stick, I have Internet on it, and I've also tried connecting another PC to this PC with an Ethernet cable to check if it's my Network Card, and this works.

With WiFi, I can see that the Computer has a Private network. When using the Ethernet Cable, it's showing that it's public, but I can't do anything about this.

The windows 10 install is clean and it worked for about a month and now suddenly it doesn't.
