  1. "Ethernet" doesn't have a valid IP Configuration

    Hello.

    I have been trying to fix this for the last 4-5 hours with no luck. I swear the computer was working fine just a few days ago. This evening, there's a yellow warning triangle above my internet icon.

    Setup:
    Centurylink DSL connected to Netgear Nighthawk
    3 desktop computers all hardwired to router (2 of which are fine, 1 has no connection)

    Was able to get into safe mode with networking (network was still dead)
    Performed virus scan found a few trojans, deleted. Reset still no connection.
    Performed IP Reset. Was successful.

    Performed diagnostic:
    Problems Found
    "Ethernet" doesn't have a valid IP Configuration

    Can someone help me figure out if I might have deleted a winsock? Registry key?

    I really don't want to do a reset and potentially lose files, Starcraft, Fallout 4, ect...

    Thank you so much.

    Diagnosis reports: "Ethernet doesn't have a valid IP configuration." There's no support offered for how to get a "valid IP configuration".

    Have you tried rebooting your router and checking your cables, For some reason your not getting a IP.

    Try running Troubleshooting By pressing the Windows Key + S and type or paste Troubleshooting then under Network and Internet click on Connect to the Internet and follow the prompts.

    Or you could always try your other Ethernet adapter and see if that works.

  5. Hello Eric.

    Just noticed that in your paste of "ipconfig /all" that your computer has an IP address of 169.254.x.x and that means that your computer is having an issue getting an IP from the DHCP server.

    To simply break it down, it basically means that your computer is asking for an IP address but there's no one to answer the call.

    I also see there is no entry for Default Gateway, should be.

  7. Thanks everyone for looking.

    @sml156
    all 3 computers are hard wired to the Netgear. 2 of them work, this 3rd one doesn't for some reason (and it just recently happened which I can't explain). It's crappy cause this is my workhorse where I play games, do photo and video editing too. Blah...

    I did reset the modem and router last night and no change. The cat5 cable is fine and the port is blinking as it should in the back. I'll try the Window + S Troubleshoot tonight after work.

    @Boris
    The computer is asking the router for an IP assignment but not getting one? Is there a reason why the other 2 would be fine and this one not? Is there some setting (missed Protocol, deleted/stopped service, something local) that I can check on the computer?
    @Berton
    How do I get the default gateway to populate?

    I appreciate your advice.

    Some of the other entires on yours don't look right, i.e. those beginning with fec. It may be necessary to Uninstall your Network Adapter in Device Manager [save the files] then reboot, see if it reinstalls properly.

    Is it possible to swap the Ethernet cable from a working computer to the non working one.

    Give the non working computer a static IP in the same subnet as the other computers

  11. Thanks again guys.

    I tried every kind of troubleshoot Win10 has. All lead to invalid IP.

    I switched the cable to one of the "good" feeds from the router to check in case it was a faulty cable/connection, and still same result.

    Here is the log from the PING from what Boris requested;

    Oh, and Ethernet 2 isn't a real physical adapter. It's just my VPN (TorGuard) obviously which I can't get to atm.

    For what it's worth, I hate Windows 10. My Windows 7 was working just fine. After the upgrade, I've never been able to sign back into my Homegroup, I can't access the other 2 desktops and 1 laptop on my network, I have issues with Cortana (inoperable) and built-in admin/guest user stuff gives me grief.

    Any other thoughts? Otherwise, I'm going to start backing up everything and do a reset. I'm almost certain it's a setting or service somewhere that's off.

    Gratitude.

    ~Eric

  12. What you could of course do is to give the computer an IP address, to do it I would recommend that you first check the IP addresses of the other computers just so that you won't run into other problems!

    on the computers that have internet access:
    - cmd -> ipconfig /all -> take note of IP address, subnet mask and default gateway.

    on the computer that is having issues:
    • Right click on the network icon in the bottom left corner
    • Select "Open Network and Sharing Centre"
    • Click on the name of your connection
    • In the window that appears, click on properties under the activity section
    • In the new window, highlight Internet Protocol Version 4 and click the properties button.
    • Click/Check the radio button "Use the following IP address:".
    • Fill in the fields and recheck the numbers!

    If you still get the error after doing the above then there's an issue with the hardware.
