  1. Ethernet port on laptop slow until Windows factory reset, no clue why or if it'll happen again

I got a MSI gaming laptop (GS66 10SE) and it's decent - but just a couple days ago the speed on ethernet became extremely slow (11mbps), on any speed test site. Normally it's around 115 mbps. WiFi speed was fine.

AND, to my disbelief, if I used ethernet cable via a USB adapter into a USB-A port, the speed was fine!

Only the ethernet port itself was having a super low speed. I tried different ethernet cables, tried the same cables on my Asus G15 laptop with no issues.

Restarted. Shut down. Full shut down via CMD. ipconfig /release, ipconfig /renew, ipconfig /flushdnsipconfig /registerdns, nbtstat -rr, netsh int ip reset all, netsh winsock reset

    Nothing worked.

I have until tomorrow to return this laptop to Best Buy, and figured my decision was made, because I figured somehow the physical ethernet port of the laptop got fried.

But decided to do a last ditch effort and factory reset the PC - and now the speed is fine!!!

    What?!!!!!!

So it clearly has something to do with Windows 10 itself. I just don't understand what it could be.

I'm so confused. Does anyone have any idea what the heck happened, and if it'll just happen again?

How to factory reset Cisco 1700 Router

Hopefully I can help you here....its a very common thing to happen.

First, I take it you dont know the passwords for console access or telnet/ssh?

I will assume that these devices belong to you.

step 1. Plug a cisco console cable into a serial port on your pc
step 2. Plug other end into Cisco console port
step 3. Using hyperterm or putty or similar connect to the serial port
step 4. boot router, and make sure you clearly can see the output (this confirms you have good serial comms)
step 5. if this fails, adjust the comm port settings (9600, 8,1,n are the default)
step 6. now you have to do the only hard part...send the break command:

    Break command list: Break Commands

Go down the list and match your OS and SW and try the sequence suggested.

If this fails several times do what I do: Install putty (free) and then to send a break so you can get into rommom just hit "ctrl-a b".

    Ethernet port not blinking...

possibly your ethernet port has died...

Unless if you format/reinstall windows , and see if that way... but overall, physically take a look at the motherboard in the computer, and see if any capacitor's top's have blown open or even have a bump on them (the tops of the capacitors should be flat) . If any indication that happens, then your mobo is eventually gonna die.

Other than that, u went through all other steps that are very known..

**My Friends system not to long ago has the exact same issue, and there were caps blown, but only the ethernet didnt work

Ethernet port on laptop slow until Windows factory reset, no clue why or if it'll happen again

    Ethernet connection/port on my laptop

Thanks for the suggested solution which I tried. My feedback:

    • Update download was completed but installation did not complete and the message popped up that stated that update is not compatible and cannot be installed.

Info sought in your mail is as follows:

    • Which build and edition of Windows 10 is installed on your computer?
      • Window 10 Pro
      • Version 1709
      • OS Build 16299.192
    • What is the make and model of your laptop?
      • Dell Alienware
      • 15" Laptop
      • System 64 bit os x64-based processor
    • Are you experiencing the same issue even when you are using another Ethernet cable?
      • yes, tried different cables
      • (also same ethernet cable & connection works on my mac notebook)
    • Have you made any changes to your computer setting before this issue occurred?
      • Can't say with certainty about changes, if any, made. Normally i don't fiddle with the laptop systems.
      • ethernet port was working just fine and suddenly became dsysfunctional about two weeks back.
      • Checked Network adapters in the device manager which highlights Killer E2200 Gigabit Ethernet Controller with a yellow mark. Also checked network adapter driver which states that installed driver is the latest.
