I installed Mumble today, the gaming mic chat platform, with the intention of creating a server for it.

Anyway, I'm in my C:\ folder 5 minutes later editing the .ini and I go to save it, only to be told I don't have permission to do so.

Then I check and the folder is Read-Only. I disable this as an Admin and go back to save it and get the same error.

It then turns out every file on my computer has been force-set to Read Only and I cannot change this at all. (?!)

Ownership of my hard drives was somehow set to Trustedinstaller (wtf?) and I had to manually change it back to myself. Even so, I cannot change my files off of Read Only.

I looked this up and kept coming up with Windows Defender's "Controlled Folder Access" blocking users from using their own files. However, if this is the case, I can't change that either since I get some obnoxious pop-up telling me that "The IT Administrator has stopped you from changing this setting" or something.

Long story short, I have spent 2 hours trying to fix this to no avail, and I am now completely locked out of saving files anywhere other than my Documents folder. What in God's name is going on?

(I have AVG antivirus, which is terrible btw, don't buy it...I did a full scan and got no malware detected. Absolutely baffled).

Windows Updated(16299.309).KB4088776 Restart is required to complete.

Hi dalchina. Good news, I followed your suggestion and reinstalled the update and now it appears as "installed correctly" *Biggrin Maybe it was not necessary to run the Windows Update Troubleshooter or maybe if necessary. But using it I do not think it could have worsened something. The installation was very fast, unlike the first time it showed step 1 and step 2 completed.

Thanks for the suggestions and for the time to respond Everything is Read-Only, computer completely crippled, wtf? :) Best regards.

And thanks for the tip of that program, I'll have it on my list.

How do you take a screenshot? *Eek! Everything is Read-Only, computer completely crippled, wtf?

Also, I think its better to learn about computer parts and everything, and then pick out your own stuff. Then, not only do you know for sure that you have the best deal you can get for the moneys, but you have the unalienable right to knowledge.

Edit: Negate all my previous posts till I fix em.

Edit#2: I kind of fixed em.
