Windows 10: ExFAT File Allocation change penalties?

I have a 64 GB flash, but the question can also extend if I want to use it on a larger hard drive. No website nor Microsoft has answered the question that I have found at least and I think about it every few years. Microsoft has a standard table for storage size and allocation unit size equivalent. What are the negatives or downside to changing allocation unit size for exFAT to smaller than what Microsoft table to reclaim file space. Will my data be corrupted faster, or unstable partition, what are the tested problems that can happen not following Microsoft Table on this. Even though some may say it's not noticeable I have many Large and Small Storage devices. I want to find the best way to reclaim space in as much of a stable way as possible.

Formating to exFAT

If you want to format an external hard drive or USB flash drive in exFAT, you can follow these steps:

• Press and hold Windows key + x on your keyboard. This open the context menu.
• Select Command Prompt (Admin).
• Type format g: /FS:exFAT and then Enter to begin formatting the G drive as exFAT

Microsoft Signs Licensing Agreements for exFAT with Five Companies

Microsoft Corp. announced today that it signed patent licensing agreements for the use of the latest Extended File Allocation Table (exFAT) with five companies, spanning industries including high-end camcorders, digital cameras and Android tablets.

The agreements cover Sharp Android tablets, Sigma and NextoDi high-end cameras and accessories, and Black Magic and Atomos Global broadcast-quality video-recording devices.



exFAT is a modern file system that facilitates large files for audiovisual media and enables seamless data portability for an easy interchange of files between electronic devices. exFAT vastly improves on its predecessor, the FAT file system, and expands the size of files that flash memory devices can handle by more than five times. It also greatly increases the speed with which those files can be accessed.

"Today's agreements demonstrate the continued success of our licensing program and highlight the adoption of exFAT across multiple industries and many product offerings," said David Kaefer, general manager of Intellectual Property (IP) Licensing at Microsoft. "The unique capabilities of exFAT allow licensees to tailor their products to evolving markets while also meeting the changing needs of their customers."

 

Allocation Unit Size

For SD cards that are 32GB and smaller, select the file system FAT32 and allocation unit size 32 kilobytes.

For 64GB cards and larger select the file system exFAT and allocation unit size 128kB.

If the phone formats the card this is what you will get.
