Windows 10: Explorer crashes with dwg files

Hello,there is a problem with a lot of our Windows 11 systems.Everytime a user tries to open a dwg file the explorer crashes. Situations where the explorer crashes:- opening a single dwg file- using file preview in explorer an selecting a dwg file- browsing into a folder with multiple dwg files in it without selecting any with only one dwg file the explorer doesn't crashSo there is no possibility for the user to open a dwg file out of the folder directly. Only when opening a file in the program like AutoCAD or DWG TrueView with the opening file dialog it works. Explorer crashes everytime.Is

Effective Way to Solve the File Explorer Crashes Issue

You can try the following steps:

1. Tap down the Windows button first to activate the search bar.
2. After that, in the search bar type control, and then click on the top-most search result, that is on Control Panel.
3. Next, in the search bar type file.
4. Now, from the search results click on File Explorer Options.
5. Then, click on the Clean button.
6. Lastly, click on Apply and then on OK.

Why does the .dwg files display as a pdf file in windows 11?

The problem you are experiencing may be due to the default file associations set on your Windows 11 PC. The file association determines which program is opened when you double-click on a file. If the default program setting for a file is incorrect, Windows may open the file using the generic PDF viewer, which will cause them to appear as PDFs, even though they are actually DWG files. You can try the following to resolve this:

1. Change the default program for .dwg files:

○ Right-click on the .dwg file and select Open as > Select another application.

○ Select your drawing program from the list, if it is not listed, browse to find it.

○ Check .dwg to display the “Always use this application to open files” box.

○ Click OK. 2.

2. Check the file association:

○ Press Windows + I to open “Settings”.

○ Go to “Applications” > “Default Applications”.

○ Under “Associations”, you should see “Computers and Devices”.

○ Click on “Computers and Devices” to see a list of file types and their associated programs.

Make sure the .dwg is properly associated with the drawing software.

3. Set the file association manually:

○ If you are unable to change the default program in Settings, you can manually set the file association by right-clicking on the .dwg file and selecting “Open as” > “Select another application”.

○ Follow the steps above to select your drawing software.

4. Restart your computer:

○ After changing the file association, restart the computer to ensure that the changes take effect.

If you have made changes and the icons are still not displayed correctly, you may need to check if there is any third-party software or system utilities that may be overriding the default file associations. OPENING DWG FILE

Hi,

To open .dwg file, you need AutoCad with AutoCad DWG Launcher. Since you have installed AutoCad you can double click on the .dwg file to be opened or open AutoCad > Click on the A button in the upper left corner on the screen > Open > Drawings > Browse to the .dwg file location and open it.

For changing the installation path, you should uninstall the AutoCad first, then reinstall it. During the installation process, select the location that you want the software to be installed.
