Windows 10: explorer.exe constantly crashing on Windows 8.1

As the title says, explorer.exe is constantly crashing on Windows 8.1.I have googled for answers but nothing I've found has helped. This has included running System File Checker, checking Launch folder windows in a separate process, and copying explorer.exe itself into Windows/System32.I've just poked around in Event Viewer, and this seeems to be related to the latest crash:Faulting application name: Explorer.EXE, version: 6.3.9600.18460, time stamp: 0x57c1b8c1Faulting module name: unknown, version: 0.0.0.0, time stamp:

Windows explore crash when searching

The tenforums link solved this issue for me.

The root cause is a Windows 10 bug where File Explorer crashes when long file names are included in a search result. The steps for the workaround are:

• Open File Explorer
• Click View > Options
• Open the View tab
• Check "Always show icons, never thumbnails"
• Click OK

 

Windows explorer crashing

Hi,

I am having the same problem as the OP in this thread.
Windows Explorer crashes whenever I open my external HDD or thumb drive in explorer..

I have tried the fixes listed in the above thread and I am getting the same error message as 'ktadie' (post 16). I think this is because I am running Windows 7 Professional. Windows explorer crashes when I open my 'Films' folder on my brand new 2tb external HDD. I have about 300 .avi files in this folder and some of the .avi files are several years old.

In short I believe I need the same fix given by 'Wile E' (post 7) but updated for Windows 7 Professional.
