Windows 10: Explorer.exe Crashes and Restarts

When double clicking to open documents in explorer, sometimes explorer.exe will crash and reload. After that, the same document can be located with explorer, double clicked and will open without issue. This problem is happening on two separate PCs. Sometimes this will happen several times per day and other times it won't happen once. I uninstalled SentinelOne from both PCs but the behavior persisted so I re-installed it on both PCs. Behavior is unchanged with or without it installed on the PCs. I was able to get a dump from a recent crash this morning and was wondering if the community might b

Thank you for your reply. If the above steps did not work, let's try another workaround. You can try restarting your Windows Explorer from the Task Manager and see if it will resolve the issue. Follow the steps below:

• Open Task Manager.
• Click the drop-down arrow beside More details.
• Under Processes tab, look for Windows Explorer from the list.
• Select Windows Explorer, right-click on it and select Restart.

After doing so, open Windows Explorer and see if it will crash again.

Windows explore crash when searching

The tenforums link solved this issue for me.

The root cause is a Windows 10 bug where File Explorer crashes when long file names are included in a search result. The steps for the workaround are:

• Open File Explorer
• Click View > Options
• Open the View tab
• Check "Always show icons, never thumbnails"
• Click OK

Thanks Zat. I had never looked at event viewer and it had more info than I thought. Seems the problem was a second computer I was trying to network with. Unplugging the ethernet cable fixed the crashes. Explorer must have been looking in the wrong place I guess.
