Cannot find Desktop Icon in File Explorer

Now that is interesting. If I do what you suggest, File Explorer Address bar changes to C:\Users\username\documents and the missing ICONS are there. But there is still not a "Desktop" folder.

Is this a step in the right direction?

In regard to your questions:

• I did not notice any changes/problems beforehand other than I had for a while been unable to right click on my desktop at all but discovered it was due to a shell extension so I believe it's unrelated
• I have tried running a few of the windows diagnostic tools that are still compatible with Windows 10 to no avail, and have repeatedly tried clearing caches and other suggestions for similar issues which don't seem to have worked
• I got one error message a few days ago when explorer crashed (for the second time I believe) but since then nothing, and I didn't record it as I have never had any long-term issues with my desktop before this.
