  1. Explorer.exe using much CPU, not responding, and crashing

I recently updated to Windows 10 Pro x64 ver 21H1. The most striking visible change is the poor performance of Edge in this version. I only mention this because I think it's connected to the problem I'm talking about here.I have a running problem where the explorer.exe process starts using 1 to 1.5 cores worth of CPU and shows a "Not Responding" in task manager for several minutes. After this period, the process either returns to normal or crashes and then recovers. While explorer.exe is in this state, pretty much everything else on the machine is frozen. This happens between 2 and 6 times an h

Explorer: not responding when opening folder with exe file

I have a folder full of *.exe files. When I navigate to the folder to read its content (files listed in "tile" mode), Explorer hangs for a minute or two displaying in the title bar "not responding". Eventually, the files are displayed but it is a bit of a pain. I modified Explorer's view options to not display thumbnails or icons of the files. But that had no effect. Is it that Explorer is attempting to read the content of these exe files to display the embedded images regardless of how I configure Explorer to operate? Is there anything that can be done to make Explorer display these files faster?

I think we can conclude the answer is ...yes...

If you have upgraded from 1903, just uninstall the 1909 enablement package (listed as a Windows update) to go back to 1903.

You have Pro so can take control by setting upgrades to be deferred for 365 days, and updates to 'Notify' in group policy.
