Explorer infers Date taken when there is none

When browsing JPEG files, explorer infers the data taken, even if the JPEG file does not include the data taken.File properties dialog Explorer details paneIt seems to be the file modified date with a time zone delta currently I am in PDT GMT-7. I would think that if there is not EXIF date taken, there should be no file listing of date taken.

    :)

Explorer shows value in jpg date taken field but jpg does not have date taken value

That's very strange. I tested with Windows 11 23H2 22631.3880 and don't have that issue. That is, Date taken in Details view remains blank unless the Date taken metadata is populated.

Your column for "Date taken" appears to be acting like the "Date" column which is a "smart" property that shows Date taken, when available, but will otherwise show Date modified.

However, I did not test with a Snapchat file. I just created a JPG file with MSPaint. Can you please do the same and see if Date taken is blank or not in Explorer?

  3. Jpg Date Taken Not Shown

Gm, I got as far as "modify" on your list but my modify button was ghosted.

Here's another thing I noticed this morning. If I right click a jpeg, properties, then date taken is missing. But if I instead open a jpeg, go to menu, then file info, date taken is displayed (although I'm not sure the date taken is accurate).

Also on some of my photos if I right click, then properties, date taken is displayed. But on others, date taken is missing.

Seeing incorrect photo dates in Photos app

    Hi christopherfagan,

As a first step in investigating this further, I'd like to take a closer look at one of the files that this is happening to. Can you reply back with a screenshot of the file info? I've provided steps below for how to capture the information for us.

    • Open File Explorer (Start > File Explorer)

    • In the navigation bar, type “Libraries\Pictures” without the quotations.

Explorer infers Date taken when there is none 16859234-7567-445a-9375-b3b6020791aa.png

    • Search for the filename of one of the images that has the incorrect date.

    • Right-click on the columns (Name, Date), and ensure that the Date, Date taken, and Date created columns are checked

    • Take a screenshot of the result with the Date, Date taken, and Date created columns visible. It should look like this:

Explorer infers Date taken when there is none cf61bdb4-dbfb-45e3-be1e-882c06db94c9.png

    • Also check the File Properties of the image

      • Right-click the image and select Properties.

      • Switch to the Details tab.

      • Let us know the Date taken, Date created, and Date modified.
