  1. Explorer opening by itself

This happened just now as I was reading an article via Chrome. I heard a sound on my speakers and then Explorer opened. It has done this many times recently. It opens but nothing happened. I've checked the Event Viewer but see nothing out of the ordinary. Is there something else I can look at?

Literally just happened now. The speakers made a da-da-du sound but while that seems familiar I can't place it.

    It might be this:

    Extensiible Storage Engine runtime

It is the only event with the right time stamp. Explorer comes up with Drive Tools enabled (clicked).

    :)

  2. Internet Explorer opens itself

    Hello,

To isolate your concern, we'd like to recommend that you perform clean boot and check if the issue still persist. It is performed to start Windows by using a minimal set of drivers and startup programs. Also, it helps eliminate software conflicts or an update
or when you run a program in Windows. Check this article
    for more information.

    Update us with the outcome.

    Internet Explorer opens itself

    Hi Rebecca,

Thanks for providing us the initial steps made to resolve the concern. To verify, were there any changes made on the PC/ browser prior to this? Does the issue only occur with Internet Explorer? It might be caused by add-ons being enabled, a possible virus infection,
or we need to check the settings of the browser. But since your sister did a virus scan, and it found no problems, we're going to try other steps to solve this issue. Refer to the following methods:

    METHOD 1: Turn off add-ons.

Add-ons are apps that Internet Explorer uses to interact with web content like videos and games. Toolbars and extensions are also types of add-ons. Some common add-ons are Adobe Flash, Quicktime, and Silverlight. See
Manage add-ons in Internet Explorer 11 for detailed troubleshooting steps.

METHOD 2: Run the troubleshooter for Internet Explorer to repair software issues automatically.

First, download the troubleshooter to solve issues with Internet Explorer performance. If it still persists, you may try the
troubleshooter to repair issues with security and privacy features in Internet Explorer. Check this
article. After downloading the file, follow the on-screen instructions.

METHOD 3: Reset Internet Explorer settings.

Please be reminded that if you reset Internet Explorer settings, all of your favorites, bookmarks, history, and saved passwords will be deleted. To do so, check this
link. This article will also be helpful to you, see
    Help for Internet Explorer.

Kindly get back to us with the result, so we could help you if you need further assistance.

    Explorer opening by itself

If you have Windows setup to "open folder to view files" whenever you plug in a drive, then, if your drive (or cable or USB port) is going bad, and disconnects/then reconnects, that will happen.

You could change the option for such drives in Autoplay, if that helps.

  6. I have a new hub and I *think* the cable is OK. The drive seems OK as well (but really how do I know). HOWEVER, the proximity in time with that service is a good clue.

Does Explorer open to the external drive when this happens? If so, then you need to do some troubleshooting:

Connect the external drive directly to the computer. Verify the problem is gone. If not, move the external drive to a different USB port on the system; see if the problem is gone. If not, try a different USB cable to connect it with. If the problem is gone, add the hub back into the mix. Does the problem return? If so, could be a bad cable, a bad USB connector, or, your drive may not get enough power from the hub. Is the hub self-powered? If not, you may need a powered hub.
Just some thoughts. You really can't use an external drive that's constantly losing its connection.

Thanks for the info and suggestions about the external drive. I believe it is connected via new hub but I think a direct connection is better. I will try that. Explorer always opens with Drive Tools selected. As for ESENT

    Hi,

I'm pretty sure just about everyone will see the same EV ID 916 error in their logs.
Should I happen to find a workaround then I'll post back here.

    Cheers, *Wink

  12. The external USB drive (where Explorer opens to) is directly connected to the computer.

    Hi,

Could it be the volume was marked "dirty" not too long ago ?
Athough it's "Clean" now, I'd still run chkdsk /r from an elevated command prompt on that volume.

    Cheers, *Wink

If your drive disconnects and reconnects, and Autoplay is set to view the drive in file explorer, file explorer will open showing the drive's contents. (Note my comment on Autoplay some time back).
