Windows 10: Explorer randomly bugging out and not loading thumbnails

Seemingly at random, Windows will just start glitching out like this and not loading any thumbnails for images, or even the proper icons for filetypes. Nothing seems to fix it other than a complete reboot.

Also, trying to open Quick Access or the My Computer page, it just gets stuck loading forever:

If I use Task Manager to restart explorer.exe, that seems to fix it...for maybe 1 or 2 minutes, before it goes right back to having the same issue. It doesn't truly "fix" until I fully reboot the computer.

Trying to use the "Open With >" context menu also causes Explorer to entirely freeze up. Like, instantly. As soon as I hover over "Open With", it instantly freezes.

Any idea what's going on here? This is pretty bizarre; never had anything like this happen before. Checking the Event Viewer, there's dozens of copies of the same Warning item: https://i.imgur.com/cpMpnmL.png

File Explorer not showing thumbnails

Many thanks for you reply. I have done all the steps you suggested, but no change,

When I open a folder containing photos, some open correctly but the vast majority open with thumbnails, but they very quickly get overwritten and you can not longer see the thumbnails.

Are there any more suggestions?

 

Windows Explorer crashes and thumbnails problem

Hi, I hope you can help me.
Windows Explorer is no longer showing thumbnails on files played by Windows Media Player. I've run cmd and regsvr32 shmedia.dll and regsvr32 shimgvw.dll. That seemed to solve the problem...but it created a different one. Now when I try to open a folder on an external hard drive it crashes. I read in an old 2008 post it was an avi file causing the problem and suggested the run cmd regsvr32 /u shmedia.dll. That solved the opening problem but recreated the thumbnail problem. Any help to achieve both functions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

But there are so many factors: how large a file is each image: where are the files located: what is the speed of access to that location: what else is the PC doing at the same time..... (check your task manager).
