    Explorer related issues.

Hello all, I am new here, I thought maybe someone could help me with a problem. It all started a few days when I noticed all thumbnails were gone. I checked a few articles from google, all settings were good. I reset the icon cache(some files couldn't be deleted but were 0KB), but most were deleted. Then I used Disk Cleanup tool to clear thumbnails(just in case). After that I rebooted and a few pictures had thumbnails, but most didn't. I tried to open a folder that had a bunch of pictures, all of the icons were white, and the green bar on top was indicating that it was loading something. After waiting a few minutes, explorer restarted itself. I checked event viewer and had this error:

Code: The program explorer.exe version 10.0.14393.479 stopped interacting with Windows and was closed. To see if more information about the problem is available, check the problem history in the Security and Maintenance control panel. Process ID: 1e20 Start Time: 01d299e3b1625770 Termination Time: 28 Application Path: C:\Windows\explorer.exe Report Id: e4843fbe-05da-11e7-9c75-40e23085f0f0 Faulting package full name: Faulting package-relative application ID:[/quote] Later on I tried to delete a file by pressing Shift + delete, but nothing happened. I waited for the verification message to pop up, nothing. About 10 minutes later the message appears "Are you sure you want to delete this file?". I am not sure what the hell is going on, I tried running "sfc /scannow" on CMD but no problems were found. Any ideas what could be wrong? Also this happens on my SSD aswell, so it doesn't seem to be a hard drive issue(it basicly happens on all my drives.). Thanks for reading.

    TL;DR:
    - Thumbnails not working.
    - Delete verification window takes ages to show up, explorer sometimes freezing while deleting multiple files.
    - Opening files with pictures shows a green bar loading, takes hours to load, freezes, still no thumbnails
    - Explorer looks screwed up *Tongue

    :)

  2. Perfomance related issues related to audio in Windows

    Hello Cyndieaa,

Thank you for posting your concern in Microsoft Community and we regret for the inconvenience. Let me assist you.

To be able to assist you better, let us know a few more details on the below questions.

    • How did you upgrade to Windows 10? Was it using Windows update or via Media Creation Tool?
    • Do you have any System Restore point set in your PC prior to the issue?
    • Does the issue occur randomly or under any particular circumstances?

As an initial recommendation, I suggest you to check for the recent Windows update you are referring to in this case. To do so, you need to check the settings through Windows update. Follow the below steps.

    1. Open the Settings Charm with the shortcut Windows Key
    Explorer related issues. [IMG]
    +
    I.

    2. Click/tap Change PC settings.

    3. Click on the Update and recovery and click on the
    View your update history
    .

    4. You will now see a list of your installed Windows Updates. If you click on any one of the
"Successfully installed on (date)" links , you will find more details for that update.

Now, follow the below methods and check if it helps to resolve the issue.

    Method 1

Follow these steps to run the Windows in built troubleshooter to identify any potential driver related issues present in your PC.

    a) Write Troubleshooting in the search box and hit enter.

    b) Click on Troubleshooting
    tab.

    c) Click on view all option on the upper left corner.

    d) Select the Hardware and Device
    option from the list.

    e) Click Next to run the Hardware and Device
    Troubleshooter.

    Method 2

Now if updating the audio device driver did not help, I suggest you to check if rolling back the driver helps to resolve the issue. Follow the below steps.

    • First of all, Press Windows logo + R from keyboard. It will open
      RUN.
    • Now type devmgmt.msc and press Enter to open Device Manager.
    • You will see all the driver list of your PC. Expand Audio Adapters

    Rollback driver

Double click on your audio driver in Device Manager. Then Click on
    Driver tab
    and select Rollback.

Important: If your drive is performing well and there is no error, Rollback driver button will be grayed out as an option.

Write to us with the updated status and the required information for us to be able to assist you further.

Perfomance related issues related to audio in Windows

I upgraded to Windows 10. Everything worked fine for a while. Sometime, after I assume some upgrades were done, the sound began cutting out. I have a Toshiba Satellite C655 laptop. I have upgraded sound drivers, and tried everything I have seen suggested.
I do not know how to reinstall Windows 10, but perhaps that is what needs to be done since it worked initially. I do not want Windows 10 if this cannot be remedied. Please help me!!

    Thanks,

    Explorer related issues.

    Hi, basics:
    What happens in
    a. Safe Mode
    b. After a clean boot

Download, install and run Shellexview (free).
Hide all MS entries, disable all others (no need to log off).
    Any change?

History: can you think of any change you made before this started to happen?

Do you have any system restore points you might be able to use?

If non of the above helps, try CCleaner and delete System related entries as suggested by program. Also run registry cleaner in it (make system restore point before).

Thanks for your answers. Unfortunately the problems are still here. I tried to boot in safe mode, cleared icon cache but still no luck. I also cleaned my PC with CCleaner, and disabled all shell extentions, the problems would still occur. I tried again to make a new folder and when I went to "new" explorer froze.. I think I installed TortoiseSVN recently but I am not sure if the problem was there before or not.

    TortoiseSVN could be the culprit.

You can try to delete some registry entries in :
    or just reinstall Tortoise

If you have usable system restore points prior to this, try system restore. However, this doesn't always work as it should (in which case you get an error message).

We continually strongly recommend the routine use of disk imaging (e.g. Macrium Reflect (free) ) which lets you restore your PC to a previous working state without technical help. Much more robust- and valid even if you have to replace your disk(s).

I tried to boot to safe mode again (after running CCleaner), and everything worked alright (except mkv files didn't have thumbnails, but all pictures did!), and right clicking and going to "New" didn't freeze explorer. I cleaned thumbnails again, and rebooted to normal mode, but the issues came back. I tried to right click again, and after it froze on "New", I checked the running processes, they were 2 "dllhost.exe" processes. I terminated both, 1 instance started again automatically but now "New" wouldn't freeze explorer. Thumbnails still not working, only few pictures have thumbnails. Not sure what else to try anymore *Sad
I also tried uninstalling TortoiseSVN but no luck.

Time for an in-place upgrade repair if you have no restore points?

Eh I guess so. Windows has a small volume with the windows installation CD, I can just upgrade my PC without a USB or CD (just by running setup.exe)? Also please remind me, I won't lose any files if I just choose "upgrade"?

EDIT: I tried to kill again dllhost.exe from task manager, and everything is working great, all files including videos have thumbnails, I can delete files, no problems at all. I will keep this as an alternative in case repair fails. If anyone has any other ideas about this please share *Smile

    Explorer related issues.

An In-place upgrade repair install will fix many things, but not those where the settings are not changed by the procedure.

For this you need an installation medium with the same base build as you have installed, and x64 if you have a 64 bits OS, else x86 (32 bits).

You should also make sure there's at least 500Mb of unallocated space on your system disk.

    Recommendation:
Before you perform the following major repair procedure, do create a disk image (see below).

Repair Install Windows 10 with an In-place Upgrade - Windows 10 Installation & Upgrade Tutorials
    - this includes a link from which you can obtain a Windows 10 iso file (" download a Windows 10 ISO"), or create a Win 10 bootable medium.

I would recommend creating the bootable medium, as this can be used
    - for any future in-place upgrade repair install
    - to boot from and use its recovery options should Windows become unbootable.
    - to clean install Windows

This will refresh Windows, after the manner of a Windows installation.
    - all/most associations will be unchanged
    - all your programs will be left installed
    - However: if you have installed some on a 2nd drive, these must be uninstalled or reinstalled on C: - else you will get an error message that you can not keep my apps because they arein an unsupported directory.
    - no personal data should be affected
    - you will lose any custom fonts
    - you will lose any customised system icons
    - you may need to re-establish your Wi-Fi connection
    - you will need to redo Windows updates subsequent to the build you have used for the repair install
    - Windows.old will be created
    - system restore will be turned off- you should turn it on again and I recommend you manually schedule a daily restore point.
    - you will need to redo any language downloads including the display language if you changed that)
    - inactive title bar colouring (if used) will be reset to default
    - if Qttabbar is installed, you need to re-enable it in explorer (Options, check Qttabbar)
This is one of the better features of Win10: as each major build comes out, that's your updated reference build, and as updates are mostly cumulative, there will be few to do.

Please consider using disk imaging regularly. It's a brilliant way to
    - preserve your system (and your sanity)
    - back up your data
    - restore your system to a previously working state in a relatively short time

Recommended: Macrium Reflect (free/commercial) + boot disk/device + large enough external storage medium.

Did you check startup programs, if there is anything strange (Task manager, startup tab). Post picture here.

Thanks again for your help people. After I removed Tortoise, I killed dllhost.exe, and restarted the computer. As for now, everything is working perfectly. All files have thumbnails, and I didn't kill any processes. So I will leave it be for now and I will keep monitoring it. I will let you know again if I have any problems. Thank you very much.
