Windows 10: Explorer search not starting automatically

Over the last update one of the settings must have been changed because ever since then searching in the file explorer has become much clunkier than it used to be.


It used to be that as soon as I started typing in the search bar the explorer would initiate a search immediately. That was quite convenient since a null result would often show up before typing the full phrase. Further I could just change the term and have on the fly updates to my search.


Now I have to hit CTRL+E to focus on the bar. Type a phrase. Hit enter. Wait. For the next term I need to do the whole procedure over again, with the added complication if I'm still at the old search results hitting CTRL+E again doesn't delete the old term.


Needless to say this has proven to be a major time waster since I often have to search through 10s of terms at a time. So I'd like to change it back to the old ways.


Further I found that


a There are thumbnails in the history dropdown, which seems unnecessary

b I cant close the window via CTRL+W if the search bar is in focus

Thank you for the detailed response. To change the search result's view from content to list, we suggest following the steps below:

• Open the File Explorer and try to search for files.
• In the toolbar, open the View tab and click List
  to change the view.
• Once changed, close the File Explorer.
• Open the File Explorer again and try to search to see if the setting has been retained.

Resolution Suggestion:

# To resolve this problem, make sure that BITS and the Automatic Updates service are started..

A simple solution but one that works in most circumstances!

1. Click Start, click Run, type services.msc, and then click OK.

2. In the list of services, right-click Automatic Updates, and then click Properties.

3. In the Startup type list, click Automatic, and then click Apply.

4. If Service status is set to Stopped, click Start, and then click OK.

5. Right-click Background Intelligent Transfer Service, and then click Properties.

6. In the Startup type list, click Manual, and then click Apply.

7. If Service status is set to Stopped, click Start, and then click OK.
