Windows 10: Explorer stuck in loop, apps not opening, extensive Windows problems

When I started my Windows 10 computer, after failing to update (stuck at 7% 1 of 3, I unplugged, and it tried to undo and restarted), a few things are happening:

-100% Disk usage. -Unable to open explorer.exe: it starts for 2 seconds, crashes and restarts immediately. -No sound whatsoever on the computer. -Unable to open anything from MMC (Class not registered). -Unable to open any modern application (Settings, Explorer) apparently the issue is "Class not registered"

I have tried a few several things, to no avail:

-Ran an SFC scannow scan (stopped midway) -Boot in safe mode, safe mode with networking and safe mode with command prompt -Renamed HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\BannerStore -regsvr32 ExplorerFrame.dll gives DllRegisterServer not found

The PC is still usable since I have Chrome, but I cannot access the Explorer, Settings app, notification center, or any metro apps.

I am inclined to do a repair reinstall, but I still think the problem can be fixed by fixing some files...

Any ideas?

Windows 10 Tweaks

Pressing “Windows+Pause Break” (it’s up there next to scroll lock) opens the “System” Window.

Windows 10: In the new version of Windows, Explorer has a section called Quick Access. This includes your frequent folders and recent files. Explorer defaults to opening this page when you open a new window. If you’d rather open the usual This PC, with links to your drives and library folders, follow these steps:

• Open a new Explorer window.
• Click View in the ribbon.
• Click Options.
• Under General, next to “Open File Explorer to:” choose “This PC.”
• Click OK

Windows Explorer crashes and thumbnails problem

Hi, I hope you can help me.
Windows Explorer is no longer showing thumbnails on files played by Windows Media Player. I've run cmd and regsvr32 shmedia.dll and regsvr32 shimgvw.dll. That seemed to solve the problem...but it created a different one. Now when I try to open a folder on an external hard drive it crashes. I read in an old 2008 post it was an avi file causing the problem and suggested the run cmd regsvr32 /u shmedia.dll. That solved the opening problem but recreated the thumbnail problem. Any help to achieve both functions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

 

Mail app will not open on 10041.

This is the suggested solution below if you haven't already tried it.

In this Windows 10 build 10041, the Mail, Calendar, and People apps may be broken due to a licensing issue with the Store Beta. To get these apps working again, you need to follow these steps:

• Open powershell as administrator
• Run the command Get-appxprovisionedpackage –online | where-object {$_.packagename –like “*windowscommunicationsapps*”} | remove-appxprovisionedpackage –online
• Re-install Mail, People and Calendar from the Store (green tile)
