    Explorer use 25% CPU and freeze up PC


    Windows 10 Pro 64 bit

    16GB RAM, 8 core CPU


    Task manager shows Explorer can use up to 25% CPU, not matter whether I have an Explorer window opens or not. When it spikes up, the PC freeze and not responsive to user interaction. Audio play may continue but video will be jumpy it probably plays 1 frame per second.


    How can I troubleshoot?

    Background task "COM Surrogate" using 25% of cpu

    PC has been sluggish a last few days, with occasional lags, and temporary freezes (none of which are normal)

    Opened task manager and noticed the .dll COM Surrogate might be causing the issues, due to its high CPU use (~25%).

    I've never known a background task to take up so much CPU.

    It persists after a restart.

    For us to better assist you, we'd like to ask a few questions with regard to freezing File Explorer.

    • Have you made any changes to your computer before experiencing this issue?
    • Have you tried any troubleshooting steps before posting this concern? If yes, what are those?

    PC Build Steps

    Ok just because I like steps i am going to create some steps. Please give me the stamp of approval/disapproval
    • Install system in case
      • Remember to connect SSD and optical to same SATA ports on motherboard
    • Turn on PC
    • setup HDD
    • run blend test in prime95 for 30-60 min
      • run realtemp at the same time
    • While in Prime95 test
      • if CPU goes above 70c in RealTemp, I have a leaky CPU
      • if my system locks up or blue screens, there is an instability in the system somewhere
      • if my system does not lock up or blue screen, my CPU is not damaged and I am in the clear!
    What do you guys think??
