Windows 10: extending C drive into an external SSD

Unable to extend my C drive into an external SSD drive. Have 3 external drives none worked.Related to this could not back my C drive to any of the 3 hard drives.Both o0tions did no work.

Extend drive C

Is it possible to extend drive C across another drive. The PC is 12 months old, has a 119gb SSD fitted which has the OS and apps on it. It is now nearly full. There is a 1TB internal drive with all data on it. Also there are 2 external drives, 5TB and a
500SSD. Any help/advice would be much appreciated.

Disk Management is a Windows built-in tool that supports to increase partition size with its "Extend Volume" feature. However, the program has some limitations in increasing disk space:

- Extend Volume only works on NTFS and RAW partition. FAT32 and other file systems are not supported.

- The Extend Volume will grey out if there is no adjacent unallocated space behind the target partition.

So, the ways to increasing C drive with or without adjacent unallocated space are different. Open the Disk Management, and follow the right tutorials listed below to extend the local disk C drive on your own now:

#1. Increase C Drive Space with Adjacent Unallocated Space

Step 1. Right-click This PC/My Computer, click "Manage", select "Disk Management" under Storage.

Step 2. Locate and right-click on the local disk C drive, and choose "Extend Volume".

Step 3. Set and add more space to your system C drive and click "Next" to continue.

Step 4. Click "Finish" to complete the process.

Note that if that unallocated space on your system disk is not behind the C drive, you can't extend C drive in Disk Management.

Unable To Extend C Drive

I assume you have two hard drives - 1 SSD which contains Windows & a normal HDD for software & that you’re now running out of space on the SSD?

Unfortunately this is the limitation of the SSD as they’re usually too small to contain all the Windows updates & Microsoft software which cannot be moved to another drive.

No matter what external drive you add you cannot extend the C drive.

Can you supply a screenshot of the disk management?
