Windows 10: External drive strange behaviorin Windows 10, pls help?

I had an old 500GB SATA3 drive, bought an USB3.0 enclosure/adapter and used as an external NTFS drive. My main rig uses a MSI B450 Gaming Plus mobo. I had no problem until recently, when I plugged this drive into the usb 3.1 gen1 port on the mobo - the hdd shows up only as Local drive, is not accessible, stays always busy and explorer/disk management utility become unresponsive. I tried the other ports. The mobo USB 3.1 Gen 2 port and the front case 3.x ports are the same story, except this time it does not even show up as Local drive in explorer. However, with the USB 2.0 - it works perfectly and as expected. This problem is only with this particular drive, others work fine.

Can anybody help me with this problem? At this point I am very wary of the USB 3.x ports on my PC and Windows 10`s overall USB support

Other things I tried: I plugged the drive into an AMD and also into an Intel laptop - works as expected, so I think it is not the hdd/usb adapter. I tried reformating it many times and no success with making it work in my PC. I tried uninstalling and installing again all the USB drivers - no luck.

Help with external hard drive

I appreciate your interest in windows 10 and also for trying the troubleshooting steps to fix the issue. I understand the inconvenience you faced. I will certainly help you with this.

I would suggest you to plug in hard drive then check in disk management you can see the drive or not.

Follow the steps to check Drive in Disk Management.

• 
  Go to the Control Panel then click on the
  Administrative Tools. .
  
• 
  Under the Administrative Tool Click on Computer Management.
  
• 
  Click on Disk Management and check the External Hard Drive.
  

Also check in BIOS whether External Hard Drive is listed or not.

For help with the BIOS settings, refer to the computer manual or contact the manufacturer.

If it doesn’t work then, I would suggest you to update BIOS for updating BIOS contact Lenovo Support.

External drive

There are several factors that can cause your external drive to not read DVDs even though the system is recognizing the device. This could be caused by a driver that needs to updated or corrupted files. For us to resolve your concern, kindly answer the questions

• Just to confirm, the device that is not working properly is a external DVD optical drive?
• Were there any recent changes or updates installed on your computer?
• Have you tried to plug the external drive to a different port on your computer?

As a initial recommendation, we suggest that your run the built in troubleshooter in Windows 10. Kindly refer to the steps below:

• Type “Troubleshooting” in the Search bar and press Enter.
• Click on “View All” in the top left corner.

External Hard Drive

Hi John,

We suggest that you try the troubleshooting steps below:

• Open your External Hard Drive file in File Explorer.
• Type the name of the file you want to search on the search box and click Enter.

The file will show up in Search Results and you will be able to move it to the correct folder.
