Windows 10: External FAX Modem using a landline is no longer recognised after update 1803

The original update to 1803 produced problems with my connection of a Fax Modem using a landline. By a lot of messing about I managed to re enable the facility, however the most recent Update has made my FAX unusable again without any resolution that I can find. I had this sort of problem back in Win 8 (reinstalled a Win7 driver as the cure for many updates) but up until now I have not had any problems with Win 10, the problem now is how to I stop Windows from assuming that any FAX is only sent via the internet, I assume this is the current problem as it was with Win8. We do not all have the services of a Fax Server so need to use the old fashioned service, via a phone line, just like many 1,000,000s of small businesses.

I am unable to re-install a Fax Modem Printer, the non functional connection was still shown in Printers etc but once removed it cannot now be reinstalled. Yes, I removed the old fax printer and the modem because that is what cured the problem last time! BUT NOT THIS TIME!.

External hard drive not recognised

Worked out what the problem was with my external drive notbeing recognised. I looked under Device Manager > USB Controllers and there itwas listed with an exclamation mark with the error saying that "the driverfor this device is in memory" or words to that effect. I right clicked thecorresponding Mass Storage device and uninstalled it and then unplugged theexternal drive. I rebooted my desktop and plugged the external drive in againand it reinstalled its driver again and I am now able to use the external driveagain. *Smile

 

Windows no longer recognises external disk as NTFS

See what CrystalDiskInfo can tell you. I prefer using the Portable App version....

It could just be that the partition and the data it contains is intact, it's just the partition ID (that tells the system the format) that has been lost. You can set the ID to 0x07 (for NTFS) using Diskpart from an admin command prompt.





If instead the volume is listed as offline, you need to assign it a drive letter - either using Diskpart or Disk Management.

 

N8 does not recognise my home landline number

I have a contact for my home landline number, and the number is correct (i.e. it works when I call home). The contact also has a picture, and a custom ringtone.



When I phone the N8 from the home number, it doesn't use the custom ringtone, it doesn't show the picture, and when I look in the log, it hasn't recognised the call as coming from my contact, but it has got the correct phone number (proving that I'm not
masking the number on calls from the home landline).



Is there something special I have to do to persuade the N8 to accept UK landline calls, and match them up with my contacts? I've checked my contacts, and only one contains the home landline number, so the N8 is not finding the wrong contact.



My wife's mobile works just fine, so the basic mecanism is OK. I just needto persuade the N8 that 01420555555 = 01420555555 (I changed a few digits, to hide my actual number, of course, otherwise you'd all be phoning me with helpful suggestions, I'm sure).
