Windows 10: External hard drive and especially its folder are very slow and as far as stop responding

Hello. I am going to start by saying I was having issues with the external hard drive lately since December 22. It used to work fine and after I safely removed it for a while I can't remember if my PC was on or turned off and then plugged it, it has been suddenly extremely slow and as far as almost always lagging for like far over 10 minutes I'm still able to copy-paste its data. Without it, the computer works fine, it's only just the external hard drive that is lagging especially.However, when I'm able to the hard drive during that time, I was still able to click on folders and copy-past

• Open your External Hard Drive file in File Explorer.
• Type the name of the file you want to search on the search box and click Enter.

The file will show up in Search Results and you will be able to move it to the correct folder.

External Hard Drive showing up on Windows, but folders not responding

I have an external hard drive (WD My Passport), which stopped working, but when I connect to my PC, I can see the folders. When I try to open the folders to copy the files, the windows says ''not responding.'' What should I do to recover my data?
