Windows 10: External Hard Drive Not Displaying Files

I am attempting to access files stored on 2 external hard drives. While I am able to access system and program files, on neither one am I able to access files that I created myself that are stored in my profile.


I tried this utility MiniTool Power Recovery and it is able to access the files, but a I don't want to spend upwards of $70 on a version that will allow me to download the files and b some of the recovery files are listed in a very generic format i.e. recovered doc file.doc, which is not very helpful when looking for something specific.


Any idea how I might be able to access all the files in these hard drives?

We suggest that you try the troubleshooting steps below:

• Open your External Hard Drive file in File Explorer.
• Type the name of the file you want to search on the search box and click Enter.

The file will show up in Search Results and you will be able to move it to the correct folder.

Yes, you may format the external hard drive. Follow the below steps.

  Connect the external hard drive to Windows 10 computer.
  
• 
  Press Windows + E keys on the keyboard to the keyboard to open the file explorer.

  Locate the external hard drive on left navigation pane in File explorer.
  
• 
  Right click on the external hard drive and click on
  Format.
  
• 
  Click Start and follow on screen instructions to format the hard drive.
