    External hard drive ununsual behaviour

I have a Maxtor M3 Portable 1TB external hard disk that is being sensed by windows but some errors are occuring.

The hard disk does not show its name it is simply known as "expansion". The eject prompt appears in the bottom right hand corner with the rest of the icons but it is known as "expansion". In Devices and Printers it is also known as "extension".

The hard disk makes a beeping noise and according to the documentation about the hard disk it does not contain any form of beeper or buzzer.

CMD commands that I have tried include chkdsk /f f: as it was a F drive and it was unable to find it giving the message "Cannot open volume for direct access"

I have also looked at computer management and that was unable to detect it and the official Drive Manager software that came with the HDD was also unable to detect it.

Any suggestions to what is wrong with my drive?

    :)

Thanks for this. I've done what you suggested and been through all the steps mentioned in the article. The hard drive works fine on a Mac computer, and I've managed to copy the information on it. It must be a Surface issue so I'll try to get a chat line tomorrow.
