external hard drive usb 3.0 vs 3.1

I have a usb 3.0 dock for my 3.5 inch spinning hard drive (7200 rpm) to back up windows. If i upgraded my dock to usb 3.1 would it back up any faster? My PC has one usb 3.1 port.

From what i've read i would see no differance unless i used a SSD.

    :)

USB 3.1 Type C not working on ASUS X556UQ Win10

This port does not appear to be working. Plugged in a WD My Passport Ultra USB 3.0 external drive using a USB 3.1 Type C adapter on the computer's port. It does not seem to recognise it all.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Your assumption is correct. I have a couple of 3.1 external enclosures, that I have tested. Depending on the size of the cache on the drive (the one that I use has 64mb), the backup job will compete in a shorter period (maybe 10 seconds), but the drive will write data from the cache for at least another 10 seconds. The only way to utilize the speed of USB 3.1 is SSD.

Your speeds will be as fast as the slowest item in the connection chain. In simple terms, if you've got a USB 3.1 device connected to a USB 3.0 port, the fastest speed will be 3.0 speed, NOT 3.1 speed.

Keep this in mind when choosing cables, items, and connection ports. Thus, if you've got two USB 3.0 devices, but connect via a USB 2.0 cable, your speeds will be 2.0. Again, your speeds will be as fast as the slowest item in the chain.

    Hope this helps *Smile
