  1. External HDD not recognized only on my Win10 pc

Hello everyone, I recently assembled a computer for me with a Ryzen 5 3600, mboard Asus A520M-Plus, GTX-1060 with the latest version of Win10. Every usb peripheral that I’ve connected so far is working but one specific external HDD is not. It’s a WD Passport bought two years ago. This HDD works on my Mac and on all of the PCs that I’ve tried so far except on mine.

It doesn’t show up on disk management nor device management. It’s like I haven’t connected anything.

Do you guys have any idea what could it be? Before posting here I’ve tried a lot of suggestion that I found around the internet but nothing worked so far!

Ext Hdd not always recognized since upgrading to Win 10

I've noticed since upgrading from Win7 to Win10 my external hard drive is not recognized all of the time. I hear the connection sound that Windows makes but my hard drive is not listed & cannot be accessed. The drive's health checks out just fine & still easily connects to another Win7 machine. Is this common with Win10, any fixes?

Toshiba external hard drive not recognized

    Hi Philip,

Thank you for writing to Microsoft Community Forums.

I understand that the external hard drive is not recognized by the PC. I appreciate your efforts in trying to resolve the issue.
It would be great if you can answer these questions to assist you in a better way.

    • Did you try connecting the Hardrive to different USB Port?
    • Does the Hardrive get detected if you try connecting it to a different PC?
    • Are you aware of any changes made to the computer recently?

I suggest you refer and follow the steps mentioned in the KB article and check if that resolves the issueError:
“USB Device not recognized” when you try to access a USB external hard drive

Note: Ignore method 2 & 5 from the above article.

Let us know how it goes.

    Regards,

    Zaki

    External HDD not recognized

Your Toshiba must be "KaPut" as Toshiba HDD are notorious for failure! I had an external 2015
Model: HDTB110AK3BA Canvio Basics 3.0 Plus 1TB and it gave up after only 3 months of usage. There is not much you can do except do the following:

    1) Don't open it

    2) Don't do anything that they suggest online to fix HDD's as it will break yours!

    3) Take it to a renowned HDD specialist that will properly retrieve your data (if it can be done so?) and you will get all you data back.

Note: To take a HDD to have its data properly retrieved will cost you probably more than the HDD is worth but, if your data is worth it, then do it.
