Windows 10: External Optical Drive from Old Laptop Not Working

I have a CD/DVD/Blu-ray player that I pulled from my old laptop so I could use it in my current laptop which does not have an optical drive. I purchased a SATA cable to connect it to my new laptop via USB, but most times I plug it in, it does not work. By this I mean, I got it to burn audio files on a DVD-R (thought it was a CD-R), but have not got it to work since then, with DVDs or CDs (behaves the same). It does show up as drive (D, but when I click on it, it does not do anything.

It consistently freezes Windows Media Player on startup of the program, and causes PowerISO to freeze upon selecting "Burn". When I go to Disk Management, it just perpetually reads loading virtual drives or something

All I am trying to do is burn my grandpa a CD of MP3s from an album I bought (Guns N' Roses Greatest Hits). Any help is much appreciated, please let me know if you need more information.

Here is what I know about the player:
It’s from a Toshiba laptop, I don't remember what model. The player model on the sticker says “UJ141”, and it says the power supply is “DC5V”, if that could be the issue

Is Microsoft aware of the Internal Optical drive not registering, showing, in Windows version 10 with an ASUS Laptop R503U ? I purchased window s10 Home OS yesterday and installed the OS on a clean HDD. And noticed the only optical drive showing is the external
Optical drive connected to the USB port. The internal drive is not showing up in device manger at all. With Windows 8 and 8.1 it was working fine. Other OS's show the drive too.

No there isn't. You can purchase external optical drives for use with your laptop.

 

Do you have that 5vDC power connected ?

 

I have the original power adapter for my laptop. Also, I noticed there is a power light on the SATA cable that glows blue when it is plugged in. Input on the laptop charger says 2.4v and output says 19v. Hope that helps.

It's not uncommon for USB ports to not provide sufficient power to external devices so I carry a Self-Powered USB hub, both USB 3.0 and USB 2.0 for older devices that are not forward-compatible with USB 3.0, usually older Thumb drives and a couple of USB Floppy drives I have.

 

No it does not. Just the cable itself.

 

Is there a way around this, I mean, I've already had to purchases several things for this and my grandpa is coming back from driving his semi tomorrow. He only comes in once every two weeks and doesn't have a satellite radio.

 

Well, it does sound like there's not enough power coming from laptop so es berton said, Self-Powered USB hub that has own power supply can help.

Just surfed Amazon for a minute, is there anyway you could recommend me one since I'm not sure if it will function as needed. There are a few that are just "splitters" and a few that are just outlet to USB hubs. I don't understand how to find the difference, as some descriptions on Amazon are very vague.

Unfortunately the power hub did not make a difference in Windows Media Player's behavior or PowerISO. I want to get this thing to work. I know I could just purchase a new one, but I'd rather work on what I have.

Is there another step I need to take or does it look as though there is another problem at hand. Monday I will be trying the drive on another computer.
