Windows 10: external RW CD/Rom not migrating

the Cd reader is connected by USB. In device manager it says "device not migrated due to partial or ambiguous match". I have seen a number of claimed solutions to this mostly several years ago bu no simple clear fix. Does anyone have such a thing?

Windows 10 thinks my dvd-rw is a cd-rom

The operating system (Windows 10) sees my DVD-RW ans a CD-ROM.





This question has been posted to Microsoft by others, but the answer given has not been satisfactory. For instance, the Microsoft representative has asked that the user visit the manufacturer's website to get the latest driver.
However, the driver for any DVD-RW is already in the Windows 10 operating system. The problem is that the OS recognizes the device as a CD-ROM and installs the driver for a CD-ROM.

Here are some things that do not work

1. Uninstall the CD-ROM from Device Manager and reboot. That just gets the CD-ROM reinstalled.

The first event is Windows 10 noticing that the device is not present

2. Try a third-party Disk-Burner. NERO Express only sees the drive as a CD-ROM and will not burn a DVD-RW

3. Sometimes the laser burns out in the DVD and only the CD laser still works. I replaced the DVD-RW with an identical model (ASUS DRW-RW-24B1ST) and reproduced all the symptoms.

4. Try the Microsoft Fix-It. That only works for Windows 7.

So... assuming Microsoft really does have a fix for this issue, please disclose it.

Your steps in post #1 should work for 99% of viruses that may be on a usb flash drive. However, there are a very few viruses that can infect the MBR of a drive. I would use Diskpart from a command prompt (Admin) to clean them. In the command prompt type DISKPART then, at the Diskpart prompt use the commands:

LIST DISKnote the disk number of the usb and use it in place of # in the command:SELECT DISK #
CLEAN
CREATE PARTITION PRIMARY

After this you will have cleaned the partition table from the usb and created a partition using the whole of the the available space. You can then format this partition in File Explorer.


For a CD-RW, if you right-click on it in File Explorer there is an Erase option.

 

CD/ DVD ROM stopped working with error: driver is migrated on Windows 10

I've had windows 10 for about 2 months, yesterday internal cd rom stopped working, says it has been migrated. Tried an external cd which worked for 2 hours then did exactly the same thing, what do I do? I had windows 7 before. My drivers are all up to
date.
