I downloaded Lively Wallpaper from the Microsoft Store the other day because I wanted a free program to run video wallpapers on my Desktop. Extremely high GPU when running video wallpaper from Lively Wallpaper. Why?

I downloaded Lively Wallpaper from the Microsoft Store the other day because I wanted a free program to run video wallpapers on my Desktop. I selected one of the default, pre-installed video wallpapers that comes bundled with the software it's called: 'customisable rain particles' devloped by BigWIngs.

Source: GitHub - rocksdanister/shadertoy-heartfelt: BigWIng's Heartfelt shadertoy port for Lively Wallpaper.

It does work, but the problem is that when the 'customisable rain particles' video wallpaper is active - my GPU, which I keep track of via Task Manager, skyrockets to something between 86% to 100%.

What also happens is that the fan inside my Lenovo ThinkCentre M70q Tiny spins hard and aggressively, and when I try to use other applications when all this is happening (like my Mozilla Firefox and Microsoft Edge web browsers), they become laggy and slow.

I've tried configuring the settings from within Lively Wallpaper itself using the following:

    • Other Application Fullscreen -> Pause
    • Other Application Focused -> Pause
    • Display Pause Rule(multiple screen system) -> All Display(s)
    • Pause Algorithm -> Foreground Process
but it doesn't seem to make much difference when the actual video wallpaper is playing.

I'm on Windows 10 Pro booting from an SSD with 16 GB of RAM. The power plan set to: Lenovo Default

    Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-10700T CPU @ 2.00GHz, 1992 Mhz, 8 Core(s), 16 Logical Processor(s)

Does anybody know why this video wallpaper is putting such a large load on my system? and is there a way I can keep using it with less stress applied to my GPU?

Hi NotLenny. I'm Greg, 10 years awarded Windows MVP, here to help you.

    1) I would ask the Store app's author who must always provide their support email address on their MS Store product page (usually at bottom) to contact them for issues like this. Right across from that email contact should also be the MS Store contact address to report apps that cause problems. A store app author has an incentive to work with you to get the kinks out of their apps because if they don't they'll have their app removed. You might attach a link to this thread to your support request so they know they're getting this publicity in the world's largest tech forums. It also is an incentive to do good work.

Otherwise I'll give you standard fixes to go over for issue of high GPU usage that might help, a Windows 10 checklist to find and fix problems and optimize to the hilt, and also everything possible to try to find the best display driver which is not always the latest:

    2) Try these fixes first for fixes for high GPU usage:

    https://www.bouncegeek.com/100-gpu-usage-good-o...

    https://forums.tomshardware.com/threads/gpu-usa...

    https://www.quora.com/How-do-I-fix-a-high-GPU-u...

How To Fix GPU Usage 100% While Idle on Windows 10 OS

    3) Go over Windows using this checklist to make sure the install is set up correctly, optimized for best performance, and any needed repairs get done: http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/wiki...

Start with Step 4 to turn off Startup freeloaders which can conflict and cause issues, then Step 7 to check for infection the most thorough way, then step 10 to check for damaged System Files, and also Step 16 to test a new Local Admin account to replace yours which may be corrupted. Then if necessary continue with the other steps to go over your install most thoroughly.

    4) The Display driver is so important here that merely updating it is sometimes not enough. So let's try everything possible to get it working correctly:

First make sure you have updated the Display driver from the PC or Display adapter maker's Support Downloads web page for your exact model number, HP Serial Number or Dell Service Tag - from the sticker on the PC.

If necessary first remove the old driver using DDU https://www.wagnardsoft.com/content/ddu-guide-t... (not necessary with Microsoft Basic driver which is a placeholder if nothing else is available) and/or installing in Safe Mode with Networking (so you have internet), or Safe Mode, accessed by one of these methods: https://www.digitalcitizen.life/4-ways-boot-saf...

While there check also for newer chipset, BIOS/UEFI firmware (very important), network, sound, USB3 and other drivers, comparing to the ones presently installed in Device Manager reached by right clicking the Start Menu.

If this doesn't give you the latest or ideal driver for what you need, compare it to the driver offered by the Intel driver update Utility here: http://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/...

or the Nvidia Update utility here: http://www.nvidia.com/Download/Scan.aspx?lang=e...

or the AMD autodect utility here: http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/windows/P...

For Display issues one fix that is working is to Roll back or Uninstall the Driver on the Display Device > Driver tab, restart PC to reinstall driver.

You can also try older drivers in Device Manager > Display device > Driver tab > Update Driver > Browse > Let Me Pick.

Then you will know you've tried everything in addition to Windows Update drivers.

Adjust the screen resolution until it fits and looks best at Settings > System > Display.

Check for a monitor driver by expediting Windows Updates (including Optional Updates) in Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update > Check for Updates to install all Updates until no more are offered.

Feel free to ask back any questions. Based on the results you post back I may have other suggestions if necessary.
