Windows 10: Factory reset... now missing 40+ GB of hard drive space?

Good evening everyone!

So, I just got finished doing a nice fresh factory reset as Windows did some updates and my computer run slower than molasses in January.

After it was done, I had some 60-70 (out of 118) GB of free space on my SSD.

Short story shorter I had to do it again.

Now I have only 26 GB of free space.

Can anyone make any suggestions please? *Smile

Thank you for the update.

As you have mentioned you have performed a Disk cleanup this might have removed the Windows. Old folder.

The Windows. Old folder contains important system and user files that let a user roll back an upgrade or Windows re-install to the previous version, either because something went wrong during the upgrade process or because the user later discovers
an incompatibility with their software or hardware in the new version and needs to revert to the old version in order to restore functionality.

Windows will automatically delete Windows. Old folder after a period of 30days.This might have provided extra space on your Computer.

Have you done a clean install or other is there a windows.old folder?

 

Just did this, I haven't found a definitive answer yet doing some searching so I figure I would ask here...

Is $SysReset folder safe to delete?

I'm running an ASUS laptop that had Win 10 Home already loaded and if I want to do the reinstall I just hit the reinstall button... will deleting the folder mess up anything there?

 

There also is a Windows.old folder

 

You have to run diskclean whe its done on the right is an option to check system files it will then run again and give you the option to remove windows.old you can delete it normally as its a system folder

 

I like running disk clean by running this in a Command Prompt (Admin). I actually have it saved as a one line batch file on my desktop that I Run As Administrator:
%SystemRoot%\System32\Cmd.exe /c Cleanmgr /sageset:65535 & Cleanmgr /sagerun:65535

Then I just always select everything in the list to delete.

 

Unfortunately the Cleanmgr didn't free up any space.

I did a fair amount of searching and found nothing telling me I can't delete the folder.

After half an hour of more searching on how to delete the folder, how to change ownership, then being told I can't make changes because I need permission from [name] even though that is both me and the user I am logged on as (with admin privileges) I just ducked out into safe mode and was able to delete most of the folder... bringing my free space up to 80gb.

If you like, Option Four in the tutorial below usually works well to clean up the Windows.old folder and other items.
