    Failed four different strategies to upgrade to Win10

    Have you tried re-downloading the media creation tool. Took 3 tries on my father's 8.1 machine using update this PC option. It hung in the same place you described around 30% of the update portion, after the file download. This is a thing, corrupted downloads, so I've heard.

  2. Thanks for the suggestion, I have downloaded a few times, all end in the same (unfortunate) result.

    Yeah it's a mystery. My father had the exact same thing you are describing and it worked. But reading through the problems people are having here, it struck me that back in the day, Many had problems with read/write speeds when reformatting, just as the faster RPM hard drives were coming out circa 2000/2001. Slowing down the hard drive in the bios temporarily, often allowed the install to complete.

    It just makes me wonder if it's certain USB 3 drives, or hard drives that are more predisposed to this behavior. Just food for thought . As an Aside, my father did have an older PC. I do not know what his hardware was, but it was home built, and it was budget, A6 trinity APu, so, 2010?

    If I stumble across something, I'll post it here, but if you get it sussed out, I would be very interested in how.

    I had to run the Media creation tool directly from an admin account just to get it to download an iso. just running it and supplying admin password was not enough.

    I've upgraded *Party*Party*Cool*Party*Party

    I undertook a number of actions, so I'm not sure if I needed to do all of these but here goes:

    1/ Unplug all USB devices except the mouse and keyboard;
    2/ Uninstall all versions of SQL Server via Control Panel>Remove Programs;
    3/ Uninstall Microsoft Security Essentials via Control Panel> Remove Programs;
    4/ Within Control Panel>Location>Administration - Set to English (United States) and click both check boxes to copy to all accounts;
    5/ Within the Run command box, type MSconfig;
    6/ Under General select Selective Startup and check the 'Load System Services' and Load Startup Items;
    7/ Reboot your PC;
    8/ Run Setup from your ISO or Memory Stick.

    This worked for me.... Let me know if it sorts your problem out.

    (Remember to edit MSConfig again and select normal boot after the install works)

    Regards

  7. Well done, you just beat me to it! I decided to give up waiting for MS to help.

    I cloned my system drive. Then did a clean install of Windows 8 (not 8.1, as my MS Key was for 8). It activated straight away. Then I upgraded to Windows 10, no problems whatsoever, took just about 80 minutes in total. There was no need to upgrade to 8.1 first.

    I would advise anyone with problems to go that way.

  8. Failed four different strategies to upgrade to Win10

    I am trying to update on a Dell Inspiron 15 that came with Win 8.1 single language. The laptop is BRAND NEW. I just uninstalled Dell crapware and resized the partition.

    All tries, whether through the regular update channel or through the media creation tool have failed. Even tried the ISO download, but it fails at around 25% with the something happened error. I even followed all the steps outlined in this forum to no avail.

    Some help would be very appreciated.

    Just some things I have found to help with the systems I've been upgrading:

    Run sfc /scannow to check for integrity violations (fix if necessary)
    make sure windows update is up-to-date
    uninstall any 3rd-party antivirus
    uninstall any hard drive monitoring software
    remove any add-on start buttons like Classic Shell, Start8 and any other Stardock software like Window Blinds
    make sure all user accounts are "administrative"
    disconnect all peripherals except mouse and keyboard
    upgrade from ISO, running it from within the windows operating system you are upgrading
    don't let it download updates when it's upgrading - it can do that after it's finished.

  11. yeah, a check mark on all the items on that list, except windows update. I'm running DISM restore health now to see if that helps and will run windows update afterwards.

    Hi

    On my list of actions earlier, try un-selecting 'Load Startup Items' in MSconfig>General. (If the Install fails between 25 and 37% it is a driver related issue, this will reduce the number of services running which may help.)

    Regards
