    @wpcoe
I think avast needs to be completely uninstalled. I seem to recall a function ngtool.exe in avast now which prevents malware from disabling/uninstalling it, and it also has negative affects on upgrades (experienced this going from 8.0 to 8.1). All antivirus/firewalls, etc. should be uninstalled, not just disabled.

Did you go to "Administrative" tab? Because that is the important part.

    Check it here: http://www.wired.co.uk/news/archive/...happened-error

Uninstalled Avast, rebooted, mounted Win10 .ISO file: installation still fails at 24%.

Did you also run the Windows Update Troubleshooter to see what's missing? I had to run it myself when I did the upgrade and that's when I found out I don't have the KB3035583.

    Scroll down to "..Something Happened"..

    • uninstalled Avast, rebooted,
    • uninstalled Comodo Firewall, rebooted,
    • did clean boot,
    • turned off Windows Firewall,
    • mounted Win10 .ISO file:

    Still fails at 24%

(FWIW, my desktop computer upgraded to Win10 just fine with Avast, Comodo and Windows Firewall installed and active.)

(Win8.1 Home) Control Panel > Region > Location tab> Home location: United States. The KB3035583 Update was installed on 7/22/2015.

    I'm no longer getting the

screen, which is what all that Windows Updates shenanigans relates to.

    Now, I am getting:

after actually initiating the upgrade process. Windows Updates is no longer a part of the equation, is it?

What version of Windows 10 are you trying to install? Home? Pro?

My apologies: Between about a dozen downloads of the .ISO file and about a dozen other attempts of upgrading my notebook, I forgot to change My System Specs on the forum back to my notebook. I had changed it to my desktop system when I was working on (SUCCESSFULLY!) upgrading it to Win10.

My notebook: Lenovo Yoga 2 Pro, i7-4510U, Intel 4400 iGPU, 8 GB RAM, Samsung 256GB SSD, 3200x1800 LED, OEM Windows 8.1 Home

I installed & launched the "Intel Driver Update Utility" which advised that graphics drivers were up to date.

My old eMachine EL1333G still work after 5 years and it camewith Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit. The MS tag on the case has a ProductKey that is different from the one from magical jellybean keyfinder, or anotherkeyfinder, so I presume that is from the SP1 update? Anyway, sincemy graphic adapter will not allow Win-10 to install, so I just downloadedit and attempted to activate, but it will not. Ientered both Keys without success.

Windows 10 appears interesting even with the lower screenresolution, and it worked well on my Dell 1545 laptop; but, I did not activateit, just went back to Win 7. Why did the Win-10 activate not work wit either of the Win-7Keys?

As an old fart computer guy (from tube analog to Dick Tracy wrist watches) and retired on a budget, get my drift, buying a new PC will have to wait until my old eMachine smokes and I am too lazy to fix it.

Because .. MS has never said that we would be able to activate Win10 with Win7/8/8.1 keys.

All they've said is that we have to do an Upgrade of an existing Win7/8/8.1 install -- and THAT gets activated.

    (

But to be fair, they never said they would not, to my knowledge. And the media creation page says to have a key ready, and the install asks for a key with a big bold box, similar to the past 20+ years ("skip" is in the background).

This is in an upgrade tool. There are no OEM/s, and if you had a licensed copy, why in the hell would you be at that screen in the 1st place.

I really don't get why it wouldn't upgrade to Windows 10. My 10" Intel Bay Trail CPU (ASUS T100) tablet upgraded to WIn 10without an issue. But I am planning to rollback to Win 8.1. *Smile
