Windows 10: Failed windows 10 upgrade from 7 with Lenovo Thinkpad E520. Is there a workaround to...

I'm reposting this under a more specific title, since my previous thread appears to have died and I'm hoping others having similar issues will find a more direct conversation. I'll forward any comments here from the previous thread if they come up. Not sure why my copy/paste came up with a different font, so apologies in advance.


Basically, couldn't figure out why I couldn't update my E520 to windows 10 from 7, while I had no problem with my E530. I ran through the long list of updated drivers/BIOS, offline with ISO, no USBs, uninstalled antivirus, disabled startup and services, etc. over the course of hours and days with no success...

I think I'm closing in on the issue. From comments here and other research, I agree it seems likely an issue with the Display Driver.



I pulled up the Intel Graphics and Media Control Panel both on the E520 (which won't upgrade) and the E530 (which updated without problem).



Interestingly, both are running the Intel(R) HD Graphics 3000, but on different versions.



E520 (unable to Win10 upgrade):

Driver version: 8.15.10.2509

Processor: Intel64 Family 6 Model 42 Stepping 7

Processor Speed: 2294 MHz



E530 (able to Win10 upgrade):

Driver version: 9.17.10.4459

Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-2450M CPU @ 2.50GHz

Processor Speed: 2494 MHz



I was initially shocked to see the E520 not listing the processor as Core i5 (given the little sticker still on the corner of this laptop). However, after some googling, I found this processor is technically a Core i5. But my guess is it must have been an early version (1st Gen?). https://www.jackcobben.nl/2012/03/27/2013/

That being said, it seems that this processor is just simply not compatible with the version of the driver that allows Windows 10. I actually went to the Intel driver download site directly and tried to directly download the 9.17.10.4229 version of this driver, but was told on installation that "this computer does not meet the minimum requirements." https://downloadcenter.intel.com/product/81500/Intel-HD-Graphics-3000



So, I think this means I'm out of luck.



That being said, I don't want to jump to conclusions, and I would absolutely love to be wrong. If anyone can think of a workaround, I'm all ears. Otherwise, I'm gonna try to get some last minute laptop deals for the office before Christmas.

Sound is not working on Lenovo Thinkpad T400 after Windows 10 upgrade????

Workaround confirmed (on my Thinkpad T500)

The *hardware* up/down volume keys reset the hardware mute flag, and you can hear the sound again.

(I'm running Windows 10 Home with the November upgrade (TH2), and *no* Lenovo software)

 

Lenovo Recalls 208,000 ThinkPad Batteries

On March 1, 2007, Lenovo voluntarily recalled certain 208,000 9-cell lithium-ion batteries. These batteries were manufactured for use with ThinkPad notebook computers that shipped worldwide between November 2005 and February 2007. All ThinkPad R60, R60e Series, ThinkPad T60, T60p Series and ThinkPad Z60m, Z61e, Z61m, and Z61p Series with 9-cell 10.8V, 5.2 Ah batteries with part number FRU P/N 92P1131 are being recalled. All affected batteries will be replaced free of charge. Lenovo suggests those computers with defective units remove the battery and use the AC adaptor until a replacement has arrived.

Lenovo ThinkPad X201 Windows 10 upgrade fail

This model seems to have some issues with Windows 10 support. I suggest you stick with Windows 7 for now:

You might want to try the suggestion of uninstalling the ISD Driver through Device Manager and reattempt the upgrade again.
