Windows 10: Failure in switching audio from laptop to second monitor

Hello all,I have noticed that when my laptop is connected to my second monitor via hdmi cord, I am unable to seamlessly switch the audio output from my laptop speaker to the monitor speakers. I often have to disconnect the hdmi connection between my two devices first, in order to change the audio output. This did not used to be a problem; I was originally able to switch audio outputs very quickly even while watching youtube videos, but now the audio output does not change remains going through my headphones even though on the display it says audio is going through the second monitor's speake

• Does the monitor on the laptop work if you disconnect the other monitor?
• Is the second monitor connected to the laptop using a DVI, HDMI, or DisplayPort cable?

While waiting for your feedback, we suggest that you disconnect the second monitor from the laptop and check if its own monitor is working. If not, restart the laptop and check again.

Laptop screen will only work once it has been connected to an external monitor, even if that monitor is switched off

Having an issue whereby I cannot see or use the Laptop screen without first plugging it into an external monitor.

  Upon Windows startup unconnected to any external monitor

    DELL opening logo can be seen on Laptop screen
    
  • 
    Screen goes black with backlight
    
  • 
    Mouse pointer can be seen onscreen if moved to the right, as though a second monitor is connected on the left hand side.
    
  • 
    Attempting to press enter and type in password in the correct order as though the screen was functional does not do anything
    
• 
  Upon connecting to an external monitor (even if switched off)
  
  • 
    Laptop screen will suddenly appear, all functionality restored
    
• 
  Upon disconnecting again from external monitor
  
  • 
    Laptop screen remains visible and functional
    
  • 
    Lock screen /unlock screen no problem
    
• 
  Upon shutting and opening the laptop lid

    Screen black with backlight, same results as windows startup, mouse pointer can be seen and moved as though a second screen is connected on the left

using laptop as second monitor?

looking for either a mouse/keyboard share program or some way to use my laptop as a second monitor when i am at home. The laptop is windows 8 the desktop windows 7. i tried to download a program called Synergy but it led me to some weird 3rd party download host where they want you to download their installer, or their toolbar etc etc decided to not got that route. any other suggestions?
