  1. Fall Creator's forced update makes desktop icons keep rearranging

I have auto updates set to manual, so that I get to decide if and when to do an update. Last week I got hit with the first forced update I've gotten with Win 10. It changed the positions of my desktop icons and when I restore the positions using Iconoid, the positions are restored.

If I move some icons especially ones near the edge of the desktop, then several icons rearrange themselves. I've tried several fixes on the Internet. http://troubleshooter.xyz/wiki/fix-d...ete_Icon_Cache
Change the Icon View, Enable Align icons to grid, Uncheck Allow themes to change desktop icons, Delete Icon Cache, Roll back to the previous Windows 10 build

I also updated my Nvidia display and tried a Registry tweak - modify the values of IconSpacing and IconVerticalSpacing. Nothing has worked and the MS forum seems to have lots of angry users getting no help. So I thought this forum, which has always been excellent, may have some answers.

My current workaround is I've whittled down my 58 desktop icons to 40 icons and have tried to move them away from the edge some. I use small icons and with less icons when I move 1 icon it doesn't cause several icons to move to new positions, but it does make the icon I'm moving behave erratically. If I move it really close to th edge of the desktop or over the edge. It will bounce to another part of my desktop with no predictable pattern. All the edges do this.

So I hope someone has figured this one out, because it looks like MS isn't too interested in fixing this bug in the last 4 months. I also decided to revert back to a previous version 1607, This worked great, my icons behaved normally again and then the next day MS forced the same update on me.

This brings up the other distressing problem of forced updates. I can see this causing all sorts of problems with other's computers, if there are even more disastrous bugs. So far this one is irritating but not disastrous. How can we stop forced updates, especially after reverting back to a previous version?

    :)

Desktop icons have started jumping around in Windows 10

In my case the random rearrangement of icons started immediately after the creator's update, too. On experimenting I found, however, that a stable arrangement of icons is possible if the lower left
part of the desktop is left empty.

  3. Windows 10 Creators Update Desktop Icons keep getting rearranged

Do you people EVEN READ the complaints? It's bad enough that you force updates all the time ( COMPLETELY REARRANGING MY DESKTOP ICONS) but then you can't even be bothered to ACTUALLY ADDRESS THE ISSUES..

Fall Creator's forced update makes desktop icons keep rearranging

Hi, not everyone by any means experiences desktop icons rearranging. But plenty do. And this problem is not new to Win 10- users have experienced this with previous editions.

Here you will find extensive threads on the subject- using a free 3rd party tool seems a resolution.
You should find some recommendations here.

You can hide updates (same terminology as in Win 7).
Windows Update Minitool (free) is useful here, or see the relevant tutorial in the Tutorial section.

  5. Thanks for the links. It'll take a good while to go through over 200 replies in the 1st link and all the replies in the other ones. It sure would be nice to have a tutorial on this that consolidates all the different solutions.

I've never seen this problem with XP, Win 7, Win 8 or Win 10 until the Fall Creators update. Of course I've experienced the icon rearrange when doing something obvious, like changing the resolution or using remote desktop. I have Iconoid to fix those problems.

Too bad this latest bug happens by itself or with just a slight movement of any icon. For now I'll just use fewer desktop icons that helps immensely. If anyone has any more possible solutions, please share them

I'm guessing there won't be a tutorial as the outcome seems to be no one seems to know how to fix this in Windows when it starts (I could well be wrong!) and the fix is to use one of the various 3rd party tools.

Tutorials focus on using Windows features.

As said, an unfortunate long-standing Windows problem which some have experienced over a good many years.
