Windows 10: Family screen time and content filtering suddenly stopped working

My 11 years old son has a Win11 desktop computer. There are my admin account and his account on the computer. I use Microsoft Family app on Android phone to set limits and it has been working fine for months since the fresh install of Windows 11.The problemsA week ago screen time statistics started to show 0min all the time regardless of my son using his account or not. There are still time limits enforced, but changing them from week schedule sometimes works, sometimes not. Mostly not. Asking for extra time and answering it via Android notification works. Family Safety web content filters can be bypassed

Family Safety web content filters seem to care only about the web page URL. If the page is allowed, but it gets content from supposedly blocked web sites, there is actually no filtering. Steps to reproduce:

1. Add youtube.com and googlevideo.com to Blocked sites
   
2. Navigate to https://www.bing.com/videos
   
3. Watch YouTube videos there
   

 

Family Screen time is not working!

I had this exact problem and these are the steps I took to get the issue resolved:

• Navigate to family safety settings and remove the child from the family having issues.
• Login to the childs account and launch Settings (windows key + i)
• Click the Accounts icon and select Sign in with local account instead
• Follow the steps to change to a local account. When completed, Login back to your account (admin account)
• Go back to the family safety settings and add your child back to the family group.
• Access your childs email address to accept the family invitation
• Verify the child now shows properly in the family settings and that the screen times are still correct.
• Login to the childs account and launch Settings (windows key + i)
• Click the Accounts icon and select Sign in with microsoft account instead
• Your family settings should now take affect.

I know this is pretty tedious, but like I said, it worked for me. If you are still having trouble, I suggest contacting support and they can help walk you through the steps to get it resolved.

 

Family safety content filtering

The content filter only applies to Edge browser. However, you can block the usage of other apps on the child account, that way the child member cannot use the other browser to bypass the filter.

Worth noting - if your child also use Chrome, you can set up family safety via google account/family feature to filter out content on Chrome.
