Windows 10: Fan running at max and and black screen when trying to update to 20H2

I've never had issues downloading windows updates before. But this time it's completely different.

About 2 hours ago, I found out that some applications I want to run had compatibility issues and so I need to update to 20H2. So I use windows update and it starts downloading. After a bit it asks to restart so I leave for a bit and let my pc restart. When I come back I log in but it seems that windows is still on its old build (may update). So I reinstate the download for updates from winupdate and do it again, thinking there must have been some error while I was away. But after it just finished downloading and begins restarting, after the blue screen "preparing your pc for updates", the pc turns off then back up again, but nothing is being displayed (bios was up for a few seconds but after that my monitor says no signal). My fans are also running at 100% for some reason! Its been like this for the last 30 minutes and I'm getting worried. For reference, I am running a Ryzen 5 1600 and an RTX 2060 (I installed the new gpu driver just before the windows update.

What can I do? Wait or force shutdown? And if so, how can I recover my saved documents and apps? Theres alot of work that I have saved that I dont want to lose... I'm just quite lost here since this has never happened to me before at a win update.

Black Screen During Driver Update

I reinstalled my laptop back to factory settings, and I wanted to update the GPU drivers. But when I try, the screen turns black during the update, but the computer is still running. I was forced to turn off the computer and turn it back on. I used system restore, so now I'm using the default drivers that came with the laptop. Can you guys suggest anything?

 

Fan speed too high and receives black screen

I appreciate if you could answer to a few questions to narrow down to the issue.

• What is the make and model of the computer?
• What was the reason for you to perform a reset?
• Does that mean you receive black screen on the desktop?

Once done with that, let’s check the cause for the fan speed.

a. While on the desktop, right-click on the taskbar, click on
Task Manager.

b. Click on the Processes tab and check if any processes that is running high.

If none of the process is running high then I suggest you to update the graphics card driver and check if it resolves the issue.

1. Press “Windows key + X” and click on “Device
Manager”.

2. In the list of devices, you should see the Display Drivers.

3. Right click on the device and then select "Uninstall".

4. In the uninstall dialog, make sure you select the option to delete the driver package from the system. This causes the driver package installed earlier to be deleted.

5. In the Action menu of Device manager, select “Scan for Hardware changes” option. This will cause the device driver to be reinstalled. Once the driver is installed, close all windows and restart the computer.

Black screen after Windows update.
