I would pray you made an image of 8, after all, how would you upgrade if you wanted to.

I would never install a preview over my licensed OS.

This is an odd one. *Eek

Mmm... wish I had done this.

I had Windows 8 on my laptop at purchase. (I hate having to buy pre-built machines, but there's little option on laptops.) I decided to try to dual boot with linux. It didn't work out. I got frustrated and simply deleted my partitions and did a fresh installation of linux. After a while I decided to go back to Windows 8. Mmm.... yeah. Guess again, fatty.

So now I'm running windows 10 tech preview on the laptop, which is fine for now, but I'll never be able to get windows 8 back on it without sending it to Asus for "repair." Which I won't be doing.

I'm planning to just bite the bullet and buy 3 copies of windows 10 when it comes out. Hopefully in an OEM 3 pack with a slight discount.

    HARUMPH!

See OPTION ONE in Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 ISO - Download or Create
If your machine is UEFI boot - burn the install media to a DVD.
If you prefer a thumb drive - pay strict attention to the FAT32 format requirement. There might be other required tasks for UEFI USB install media - I haven't read the tutorial for a while.
It's just easier to burn the install to a DVD - nothing to think about really.

Then follow this tutorial using the install media you created above.
    Clean Install - Windows 8

The Win8 key should be read from BIOS - and you're back in shape and eligible for the free Win10 upgrade when it is released.

Why... Mr. Fast... that's amazing. Wouldn't you know that Asus likes to say your ONLY OPTION is to send the item into them for repair. What a bunch of twats.

Thank you SO MUCH for your help on this front. FYI, the downloader that checks for the key within your BIOS (which worked like a charm) allows you the option directly of burning to a DVD or a USB. Since I have no DVD drive the USB option is great.

w00t w00t! I signed up here just for the fun of sharing my "oopsie" and look what you did... you made my day! *Biggrin

    Thanks again!

. The machines must not wiiiiin... *Smile

Windows 8 is reinstalled and the little laptop can sit there waiting patiently for the full-size update to windows 10 when the time comes.

Again, I really appreciate the heads up. Asus really ticked me off with that answer and somewhere deep in my guts I knew it couldn't be true.

My physical appearance is not too dissimilar from the character in the BBC TV series.

I've just survived a horrible OneDrive/Upload Center problem.

The only way it got resolved was for me to turn off syncing, delete all the cached files and then turn back on syncing.

Yeppers, we did! Because it was offered to some who tried to get it!

Maybe it's because most of us hadn't seen this thread before . . . I haven't been on my Windows 10 Build 9926 laptop in several days because of other things on the agenda, so I had no idea of what was going on.

You don't just go out there and order Build 9933 or Build 9935; you gotta wait until it's offered. I can guarantee that if it had been offered to me in the past several days I would have bitten! Fact is that when I read the first two or three posts in this thread awhile ago, I ran into the other room and fired up Lappy 10 to see if I could get it too. Who wouldn't?

But something happened and I guess when Build 9926 came through it changed me from Fast to Slow. Dirty jokesters, but I guess maybe at least I missed getting caught like the rest of those who bit, that is if I'd had my lappy on.

I didn't choose to download the update. MSU did it automatically. MSU doesn't give you a choice of what you want and don't want to download. Why some got the update and some didn't I don't have a clue.

  15. Yes it did - change from fast to slow. My take on it is that too many people were on the fast track - many who shouldn't be. Fast vs. slow isn't about when you get the release, it's about how much testing has been done.

The three rings (4 if you count development testing) are
internal: very buggy, developer think, everyone knows how to do this
fast ring: some quick QA ... notes in a reply to a post on a insider thread
slow: acceptable for release to more technical users willing to chew on some splinters ... a blog might be being written and an eMail will be sent in a few days.

MS servers must have been getting crushed by the rush to get the next build first ... not because of any technical prowess, but just to be first on your block with a magic decoder ring.

So, they snuck in a throttle and some techies noticed - that's who MS wanted to notice.

This post is just my take on what's going on with the builds.

    Note the sarcasm emoticons
    ...... yes I'm being sarcastic
    ...... no I'm not running 9949

I picked your post to reply Wynona, because you made a salient point - MS changed the ring. That and we worked on your laptop for a while, until it was beyond revival *Sad

Two notes: - I used your laptop as an example to help another member install a 2nd drive in their laptop ... they couldn't believe a laptop could hold two drives (I told them about your machine and how I learned that some HPs do in fact support 2 HDDs.) and
... a different member actually had to replace the CMOS battery and it WORKED! I enjoyed working with you on the laptop - wish the outcome had been better. Glad to see you on the threads.
