Feature updates keep breaking my Windows 10

Every automatic update since last summer has been causing problems for my pc. The first one that failed was Windows 10, version 2004. Now it seems to be Windows 10, version 20H2.

I did this pc build in 2018. Here are the parts: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/NGK8Mb

Mostly it hangs in the high 80-90 percent complete installing the updates. I have let it sit for two days like that and after the last very slow 1 or 2 percent increments, it usually never advances or completes. Although it completed a few times.

I have checked that there should be sufficient hard drive space. Like 50GB, since I don't really know how much space the updates require. Maybe my expectations are too high, but I think Windows should be able to tell me if it is a storage space problem. It has never reported an error of any kind.

The very first time there was a problem, and some other times, the upgrade process completed and I was able to boot and login to Windows but after login the screen goes black but with interactive mouse cursor.

I have searched and seen many postings of other people reporting that problem but none of the recommended solutions have helped. Often it is reported that people can open Task Manager with Ctrl-Shift-Esc (or Ctrl-Alt-Del) but when I try that nothing happens on my screen. (The end goal there being to use Task Manager to restart Windows Explorer.)

The only way I am able to get back to a usable desktop is to boot into recovery mode and uninstall the last feature update.

Here is a screenshot of Windows Update history: https://imgur.com/3v9oPQ0
(Sorry, I could not find a way to copy/paste this text.)

If anybody has an idea of what could be causing this I would appreciate any guidance. I don't much care - for now, I guess - about Windows feature updates but I would like the computer to stop breaking after every automatic update and I generally prefer to keep my systems up to date, especially quality updates.

  2. Windows 10 Pro and Ergnomic Break Reminder

    Hi,

    Apologies for the late reply.

Do you remember installing any break reminder software?

It looks like it is a pop up from a break reminder software.

I suggest you to look for this in Programs in features and uninstall it if do not use it.

    Try the following steps:

    • Press Windows + R keys to open Run Command

    • Type Appwiz.cpl and hit enter

    • Search for the programs and un-install it.

    Regards,

Pressing “Windows+Pause Break” (it’s up there next to scroll lock) opens the “System” Window.

Windows 10: In the new version of Windows, Explorer has a section called Quick Access. This includes your frequent folders and recent files. Explorer defaults to opening this page when you open a new window. If you’d rather open the usual This PC, with links to your drives and library folders, follow these steps:

    • Open a new Explorer window.
    • Click View in the ribbon.
    • Click Options.
    • Under General, next to “Open File Explorer to:” choose “This PC.”
    • Click OK

Feature updates keep breaking my Windows 10

Microsoft to make Windows 10 updates mandatory

Well, at the moment at least, you can choose to defer upgrades. Under Settings > Windows Updates > Advanced options you need to check the box labeled "Defer upgrades". What does that do? Good question. The answer I've found might illuminate it to a degree.

    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-10/defer-upgrades-in-windows-10

I hear this only applies to Pro and Enterprise editions. But I can't verify that.
