Windows 10: Feb 13, 2021 Windows update has caused my USB mouse and Keyboard to stop working

Dell computer. I installed the updates and when the computer came back my keyboard and mouse no longer work. I only have USB options. Without a mouse and keyboard I obviously cannot do anything other than powering off the pc. Need a fix !!

I have an old Dell Studio that is running windows 10 ---

Ir has Windows 10 and SSD installed - to me it does what it needs to do but this darn mouse and keyboard stuff stopping working with no rhyme or reason is making me very frustrated.

Keyboard and Mouse are wired - NOT WIRELESS

• I cannot easily unplug and plug in the mouse/keyboard to get it going again... they are still lit up but they are dead basically and I have to do a hard reset.
  
• USB selective suspend is disabled.
• I checked the drivers for the keyboard and mouse and they are updated.
• I checked to see if PC has KB4074588 and it does not.

I am not sure what else to do.... I can go days without the issue and then days where anytime I step away from the PC it stops working.

I can say when it is working it just does not just stop ... only when I walk away and the machine is idle or the screen is locked.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

The answer is in this thread on page 2 in a post by Sumit Dhiman2 but I will add it here:

If you have a system that is running Windows 10 V1709 and you can apply the update mentioned in the above article it will undo the damage caused by the KB4074588 update. It is KB4090913 and the link to that update is below:

It also talks you through removing the patch manually if you can't access your keyboard and mouse.

One other thing that appears to be emerging is that the issue may be caused by Antivirus software making the KB4074588 patch not complete properly. When that happens it does remove the existing keyboard and mouse drivers in an early part of the Windows
Update process and then when it should apply the new versions that come as part of the update, it fails and they never get installed. I suspect that something that happens in that process appears to your anti-virus software as malicious and it blocks the
update from installing the drivers, or something else in the update that occurs before they are applied and the net result is they never get installed and you are left with no keyboard and mouse.
