  1. Feedback: Windows 10 is a Terrible Experience

I've spent a full month with a BSOD-apt PC trying to fix it. I want Windows tech to know the angst that my "following the white rabbit-of-solutions" has led me.

To begin with, I've built my own computer and ran Windows 7 on it without any issue whatsoever. While there has been an inevitable hiccup every now and again, I've been a die-hard Windows fan.

Then in July I got a new monitor whose drivers required Windows 10.

    1. In July, I upgraded from Windows 7 to Windows 10 since I wanted to use a newer 240Hz monitor. Learned that I had to pay for the upgrade & it's not free anymore. Shucks, I think, but OK I get it. ~$150 later and I'm a proud new owner.
    2. After following the instructions to upgrade, my computer kept suffering from BSOD. Used Blue Screen Viewer to see ntoskrnl.exe failed (Error Code doesn't matter for the story, but I searched for answers).
    3. Updated all my drivers to Windows 10 (uninstalled old ones, installed new ones) + Windows Update.
    4. Thinking that it was over, started doing my work. That night, as I was playing video games online with my friends, my PC BSOD'd again. Same issue.
    5. I decide to completely refresh Windows 10 on my C: drive (D: is all of my files, so should be simple).
    6. I ran the Reset PC function built-into Windows 10. It told me something similar to: "Error: Cannot reset PC, no changes have been made".
    7. Searched online for answers, ran SFC & DISM. No issues were found. Double checked my drivers, especially video, but everything is updated.
    8. I use the Reset PC function to try to make a bootable USB. That too failed.
    9. I searched online for your Installation Media Tool to try to make a bootable USB. That failed.
    10. I finally found a way to create my own ISO. Had to use Rufus ISO to USB to create the bootable USB.
    11. Ran the bootable USB, but it failed partway. After searching the error code, learned I had to fix the BOOTMGR.
    12. I tried fixing the BOOTMGR. Access Denied. Apparently my C: drive was reformatted, but not recognizable anymore due to a part-way loaded OS.
    13. I fully reformatted the C: drive, then used DISKPART to assign drive C: again. Access Denied. I searched online on my phone and finally found an answer that Microsoft knows there are errors with later versions in this regard. So apparently need to use the ISO 1703 build instead, and then use Windows Update once everything is set.
    14. Found the ISO 1703 ISO available online from a reputable source, then had to use Rufus ISO to USB again on another computer.
    15. Re-did the DISKPART & other tasks above. Finally got the Windows 10 USB Installer to work! ... Until my computer got stuck in a boot loop of BSOD again.
    16. Searched online again. I had to go into the registry and change the ChildCompletion value from 1 to 3.
    17. Finally! I can see my desktop again! I ran Windows Update, immediately installed the most up-to-date drivers, and thought I was done with it. This was all on July 15th.
    18. However, up until today (August 4th), I've gotten a random BSOD at least twice every week with the same MiniDump results: ntoskrnl.exe
    19. Today, I tried running the Repair tool to Reset my PC > Remove Everything > Only Windows Drive > Clean Drive, but after it restarts it just gives me an Error without a code, saying no changes have been made.

Now I'm going to bring my system to a tech, along with my MiniDump files, to flush my computer and get this done.

I'm sharing this extremely frustrating story to emphasize that upgrading from Windows 7 to Windows 10 is a nightmare. I'm an electrical engineer, so I can be tech-savvy enough to know what to Google, but I just can't fathom how anyone else can get your system up-and-running.

    :)

    Windows 10 Tweaks

Pressing “Windows+Pause Break” (it’s up there next to scroll lock) opens the “System” Window.

Windows 10: In the new version of Windows, Explorer has a section called Quick Access. This includes your frequent folders and recent files. Explorer defaults to opening this page when you open a new window. If you’d rather open the usual This PC, with links to your drives and library folders, follow these steps:

    • Open a new Explorer window.
    • Click View in the ribbon.
    • Click Options.
    • Under General, next to “Open File Explorer to:” choose “This PC.”
    • Click OK
