  1. Figuring out why a powerful simulation computer keeps freezing

Good day! I'm having trouble with a powerful simulation computer we use to do simulations in an academic setting. I have been experiencing that for some heavy simulations, the computer will freeze. That is to say, everything on screen becomes frozen and unresponsive. No response to mouse or keyboard commands. No blue screen of death. It will just remain on, showing the last frame, indefinitely (at least for many days, I have not run the experiment much longer as of yet). The only way out is powering the computer off an on again. I have not been able to figure out what is going wrong, and our IT department does not get any further than saying we should reinstall windows. That is not a jab at them; their job is not taking care of these high performance machines, but instead providing general IT support.

Now, my initial thought about what is happening was something along the lines of too high CPU load, too high GPU load, running out of RAM, faulty RAM, etc. So I ran the following tests:

Prime95 with Blend option: can run for multiple hours, using 100% of all cores and 100% of the memory. No freezes.

Furmark: taxes 100% of the GPU, no problems.

Memtest: Ran many passes over more than 24 hours, not a single issue found.

This is a bit of a puzzle to me; none of these heavy loads seem to be an issue. But if I run a specific simulation, it will always crash the computer. If the specifics sound relevant to you, I run into this problem when using a multitude of software packages, such as COMSOL, Cadence Microwave Office, ANSYS Maxwell. I think a common denominator is heavy meshing of the geometry, which I think is mainly taxing on the memory.

Does anyone have an idea of what could be going on, or how I can further diagnose the problem? Something tells me that maybe virtual memory is an important thing to look at, except that I know nothing about it, especially on a system with 128GB of RAM. Which brings me to the following part, the specs of the computer:

    OS: Windows 10 Enterprise

CPU: 2x Intel Xeon Silver 4114

    GPU: NVidia Quadro P4000

    RAM: 128 GB

I still have to look up the specific timings of the RAM as well as the motherboard and SDD type, I suppose those can be relevant too.

Listed below are some possibilities why the computer keeps on freezing:

    • Outdated drivers.
    • Virus and malware.
    • Corrupted system files.

We suggest performing the steps on this article that can help resolve the issue.

    Computer Keeps Freezing

It froze again, and the common problem I see throughout most of the freezes is a driver atksgt.sys being blocked from loading. It is related to Tages Protection from Tages SA and it says it has a driver that is installed that causes stability problems with my system. It says it will be disabled but I think this is why my pc keeps freezing. Any suggestions as to what it may be for and/or if I can get rid of it and how?

I never downloaded a program from Tages SA so I am not sure what it could be from.

Figuring out why a powerful simulation computer keeps freezing

Windows 10 keeps freezing my computer randomly

I have done these boilerplate "solutions" so many times the computer almost does them by itself.

It does appear that Microsoft is making some small effort on the problem (without even admitting that it exists). Over the past 18 months I have noticed:

    • the interval between freezes has improved from about every 2 operating hours to about 12 hours, on average
    • the hard reset after a freeze no longer throws Win10 into one of its weird states from which it used have great difficulty recovering. Now when a freeze happens I can do power off, wait, power on and get a normal startup.
So keep up the good work, guys. Our great-great-great-grandchildren will thank you for it.
