  1. File browse dialog showing limited results compared to Explorer window

Hi all, I don't know if this is related to Win10, or an issue that existed with my Win8.1 before. I just noticed it after upgrading yesterday.

So, my firewall just prompted me about an outbound connection attempt by a file (named C:\Windows\System32\SIHClient.exe) and I didn't recognize it. I found it using explorer, and it's unsigned; so I visited VirusTotal.com and tried to upload it... but from the file upload browse box in Chrome I can't see the file! Even typing *.* and open doesn't remove the "filter" and reveal the file. (I finally ended up copying it to desktop and uploading from there, but still don't know what the file does.)

Anyway... I'm puzzled. I thought that Explorer's "File View Options" (show hidden files, do not hide operating system files, etc.) were used throughout Windows once applied. Am I wrong? Should I suspect a virus or is this normal? What gives?

(P.S. As a side note... I wish MS and other developers would just sign all their files. I don't understand why they don't.)

    :)

  2. Why does My Win 10 have three Desktop folders?

The Browse command explicitly launches the desktop namespace view and can't be changed afaik. However, the Open/Save as dialogs from other applications should respect the setting (untick "show all folders") you made in File Explorer.

To check, open the Run dialog and click Browse...

Hi Australian, yes the new File Explorer in Windows 10 does have a strange look and feel, let us see if we can get it working like the older versions . . .

    Open Windows File Explorer

On the View Ribbon (tab) click Options

In the resulting dialog, at the top, set the 'Open Explorer to' drop down, change that from 'Quick Access' to 'This PC'

At the bottom Uncheck both options in the Privacy section and click 'Clear'

Click on the view tab on that dialog, uncheck the top option 'Always show icons, never thumbnails'

    Close that dialog

In the left pane of File Explorer, right click an empty space and uncheck 'Show all folders' and 'Show Libraries'

Close File Explorer and re open it, is that any better?

  5. That link says, "Seems like SIH is for 'Silent Install Helper'."

Yeah, I found that earlier, but I was hoping for a bit more authoritative comment than "seems like..." *sarc
    But thanks anyway.

  6. I looked it up thru google ... SIHClient.exe is a windows 10 process that possibly deals with updates or store updates so windows can silently look for updates while you're working on whatever

The OS itself gives the answer. Run the Task Scheduler with the command %windir%\system32\taskschd.msc /s
In the left Tree View navigate to: Task Scheduler (Local) -> Task Scheduler Library -> Microsoft -> Windows -> Windows Update (see Screenshot).

Click the Task named sih and there's an explanation:
This daily task launches the SIH client (server-initiated healing) to detect and fix system components that are vital to automatic updating of Windows and Microsoft software installed on the machine. This task can go online, evaluate applicability of healing actions, download necessary payloads to execute the actions, and execute healing actions.

    Regards, Jo

Thanks Jo Mei, that was an excellent explanation.
Now if I could only get the answer to the primary question in my initial post. Specifically, as outlined in the third paragraph.
Anyway, thanks again for the info and method to learn about SIHclient.exe. Very useful.
