Windows 10: File deletion, change permissions . .so complicated

Trying to delete a file but need to change permissions . .why so complicated? I want to install a file of the same name but it won't let me until I get rid of the other file. In properties there are 9 users/groups in security and 15 group/users in advanced? how do know which to pick? I've changed ownership in advanced but there are 5 other references to me?

Windows is extremely confusing in its permissions and file ownership.*Sad

If Taking Ownership of the files does not work, then the ACL and permissions are misconfigured.

Permissions precedes the ownership, you can have ownership but incorrect permissions in accordance with the ACL Access Control Lists (Windows).

Microsoft - How Permissions Work

I suggest that you open powershell (Search > type powershell > Right click > run as admin) and execute this command:

icacls "C:" /t /c /q /RESET
This command restores permissions to default for all files contained within C:\ quietly.

Followed by this command once completed:

icacls "c:\" /t /c /q Administrators:f
This command restores full permissions to the Administrators on the computer, which I presume you are an Administrator.

And reboot the computer, and finally attempt to delete the file after attempting to retake ownership.

If that does not work, then I suggest using a third party utility known as UnlockIT:
Downloads - UnLock IT

And download, install. Ensure you select customized installation.

Right click the folder that contains the files or the files individually that you would like to delete, and follow as here:

Then this should delete all files you right clicked upon after restarting the system.

You should not run into issues regarding permissions after this, and if you do, post again and I'll look into it.

Side note: often times malware tends to hijack a system and fluff itself in permissions that benefit itself.

Cannot delete files because of permission error- cannot change permissions

I just purchased a laptop running windows 10. From the moment i started working with it i noticed i couldn't delete any files. So i did the research and found the method of changing the permissions by going to the properties of the folders and changing
the permissions. My laptop will not let me change the ownership of any files to me and will not let change my permissions to full control or even put me on the list of permissions for files. Each time i hit apply it says "changing ownership of.." and shows
all this stuff, but in the end i get an error message saying that i couldn't get control of all of the file i just chose. Please help?

Hi David,

Thank you for contacting Microsoft Community.

Are you trying to give permission to particular files and folders?

I suggest you to follow the below step and check if it helps.

Once you choose the file that you want to give permission, right click on it.

Click on properties and go to security tab, check whether any permission have been set.

After you have viewed the permissions that are already set, you can now click on the Advanced Button that is right below the "Permissions for Authenticated Users"

Once you have clicked Advanced, a box like this should appear, the "Permission Entries" box, which shows all the permissions that are set for the users. Now, after you have spotted the user whose permissions you wish to change, click "Change Permissions.

Click on the user you would like to edit, and then click the option that says "Change Permissions" which is right below the box.

Once that is clicked, you are going to get the same box pop up, but this time, you can actually edit the options. You do that by clicking the "Administrators" user again, and this time, you are going to click the "Edit" option.
