File Explorer and Paint to get support for AVIF images in Windows 10

Microsoft is working on major new features for Windows 10 but the company is not ignoring the smaller things either. Windows 10 does not support the AVIF image formats natively but it appears that the software giant is looking for ways to bring this functionality to the core apps like File Explorer and Paint.

In Windows 10 October 2018 Update or older, the File Explorer and MS Paint fail to display the AV1 Image File Format (AVIF). As you can see in the screenshot below, the File Explorer is unable to generate a thumbnail for the AVIF image formats.

Similarly, Microsoft Paint throws an error that says the AVIF is an invalid file format and it cannot be loaded.

According to a post on AOMediaCodec’s Github, both File Explorer and MS Paint have been updated with support for AVIF images in Windows 10 19H1 preview builds.

“Windows File Explorer can show AVIF thumbnails, display Exif metadata and preview AVIF images,” the developers stated in the implementation document. “MSPaint.exe. The “Paint” app in Windows 10 can display AVIF images,” the document adds.

The support for AVIF image format is available in Windows 10 19H1 and the users may need to install the AV1 Video Extension from the Microsoft Store for the best experience.

“Requires Windows 10 “19h1″ preview release build 18305 or later, which can be obtained from the Windows Insider program, and the AV1 Video Extension,” the document explains.

It’s also worth noting that the nightly build of VLC Media Player was also updated recently with support for the new file format. According to a Bugzilla post, Mozilla is also planning to update the Firefox browser with support for the AVIF file format.

    Windows 10 Tweaks

Pressing “Windows+Pause Break” (it’s up there next to scroll lock) opens the “System” Window.

Windows 10: In the new version of Windows, Explorer has a section called Quick Access. This includes your frequent folders and recent files. Explorer defaults to opening this page when you open a new window. If you’d rather open the usual This PC, with links to your drives and library folders, follow these steps:

    • Open a new Explorer window.
    • Click View in the ribbon.
    • Click Options.
    • Under General, next to “Open File Explorer to:” choose “This PC.”
    • Click OK

  3. Cannot edit images when saved in Fresh paint

    Hi Kamila,

As per the information, I understand that when you save an image drawn in Fresh Paint, you are unable to edit the image once saved.

If the above is true, I suggest that you follow the steps below to save the image in a manner that will allow you to edit it.

    • To save your painting right click on fresh paint and click on
      Save as
. You will get an option to select the location.
    • Select the location and save the painting.
    • When you reopen fresh paint you will be on the painting you used before closing fresh paint. If you do not get the painting, you may click on image and go to the location and select the image to edit.
