File Explorer Causing explorer.exe to spike CPU Usage Up to 150% In Windows 10

Hi. I have just installed a genuine Windows 10 Enterprise N version 1803. Recently, I noticed that my laptop is running slow and found out that explorer.exe spiked the CPU usage up to 150%. I also noticed that this only happens when File Explorer is opened. In File Explorer, the icons for each file will flash on/off. Once I closed File Explorer, the CPU usage for explorer.exe will go down back to normal.

Anyone have similar issues like this. If so, how do I fix this? Any help or tips on solving this is greatly appreciated.

    :)

    Problem: Explorer 50% cpu usage

Every day, at intermittent times unrelated to anything I do [it happens when I'm doing nothing], Explorer starts running with each core at about 50% cpu usage, and does not stop. Temperatures and fan speeds rise, fans become very noisy.

    Speedfan indicates core temps rise to ~ 70 degrees C, "Temp1" rises to 75 - 80 degrees, fan 1 speed ~ 4000rpm,
    fan 2 speed ~ 2500 rpm.

I have just installed Windows 10 so it seems it could not be caused by a virus/malware.

In windows 7 forums some users found the problem was caused by a corrupted file:

    Explorer.exe 50% CPU usage - Windows 7 Help Forums

Since my problem is intermittent is it unlikely to be caused by a corrupted file?

I can't use the solution suggested in the W7 forums because when I kill explorer I lose my desktop.

I ran diskcheck on both my hard drives and it reported no errors found.

    Any suggestions would be welcomed.

Can someone please explain why a corrupted file would cause explorer to run at 50% cpu usage?

File Explorer Causing explorer.exe to spike CPU Usage Up to 150% In Windows 10

File Explorer spikes CPU usage in Windows 10 Home, version 1607

    Allan-

This problem doesn't always happen under similar circumstances. It's difficult to reproduce: it didn't happen after I first posted - until today. I had three file explorer windows open. Two were subdirectories with Arduino libraries; one was a subdirectory
with perhaps 20 subdirectories plus about 30 or 40 PDF documents. When the problem happens, task manager shows CPU usage > 90% and file manager usage at about 48-49% (I can't see where the other core is being used.) I also had the Arduino IDE up, but not
compiling or downloading, and Notepad++ up with several header files open.

Two interesting things about this configuration:

    1. When I open a file explorer window on one of the subject directories (in particular the one with all the PDF files), the CPU usage usually spikes to >40% for a few seconds, then settles down to practically notihing. Adding the library file windows behaves
about the same, and performance is normal.

    2. When the problem occurs (and I'm not sure what triggers it), the CPU usage spikes up and stays that way. If I proceed to close the open file explorer windows, the CPU untilization stays high - until I close the last one at which point the CPU utilization
drops and things are back to normal. If I reopen the windows, I don't see the problem come back. This seems to be an example of "problems that go away by themselves come back by themselves."

Here's the info about my configuration:

    Samsung Spin 9 laptop

    Intel I7-6500CPU @2.50GHz

    8GB RAM

    500GB SSD

    Win 10 Home 64-bit version 1607

I regularly scan my machine for viruses using MalwareBytes and Norton, and have found nothing.

At least I should be happy the problem isn't persistent.
