Windows 10: File Explorer filters don't work if the search box is used

I've searched the forums for an answer and other people have the same problem but I haven't found a solution yet. Older versions of windows pre Windows 10 did not have the problem I describe below, and filtering worked as expected.


Goal: I want to identify all the files in one folder that I have modified in the last week, including all files in the sub-folders. I want to be able to get a list of all files in a particular folder and sub-folders, filter by Date modified, filter by Type, and sort by Folder.


Problem: If I use the search box in the top right and enter "." I get a list of all files and folders, now I want to filter them for just word and excel files. After using the search box, however, all of the filters become disabled/unusable with the exception of the "Date modified" filter. The tiny popup shows a spinning wheel and "Computing filters...", a task that never completes no matter how long you wait. If I just navigate to any folder, including subfolders, all of the filters remain functional.


In another similar thread somebody mentioned how the filters don't work in "Libraries", and that it has nothing to do with indexing. So maybe when you use the search box it goes through "Libraries"?


Any ideas for how to work around this problem other than creating a long and complex search string?

File Explorer Search Not Working


I am trying to search in File Explorer (Windows Explorer, My Computer) and it will not find anything. I can copy text from a name in the list and paste it in the search box and it still finds nothing. I have looked at the suggestions that have been posted and nothing I find that is relative to this works. Anyone have any suggestions? I am running Win 10 Pro on an I3 coustom desktop computer.

 

Cortana search filter list

I have a lot of space for display content in Cortana search list, and 80% of it not used because Cortana sorting items by types.
How disable all filters and make visible all suggested content?

 

File explorer search box history dispears after click Quick access

Windows 10 version 20h2

Steps to reproduce:

1. Open file explorer

2. type something in search box

3. clear search box

4. click search box again, you will see a drop down list showing recent search history

5. click the Quick access which is located at the top of file explorer Navigation pane

6. click search box again, it does not show the history list anymore

I have to close file explorer and open it again to get the search history back.
