Windows 10: File Explorer frequently crashing when using multiple windows

    File Explorer frequently crashing when using multiple windows


    Recently upgraded from Windows 7 to Windows 10 19041.330. I frequently need to open many File Explorer windows 20+. This worked fine in Seven. Now that I'm on Windows 10, I can't seem to open more than about 10 explorer windows before it crashes. I try to open another explorer window, but it appears blank, reads as "Not Responding" in task manager. When this happens, often but not always an instance of COM Surrogate will be stuck on like 40% of CPU use according to task manager. When this happens none of the other instances are usable anymore so I have to End Task on explorer and start over.


    I've run "sfc /scannow" and "DISM /Online/Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth" but doesn't find anything, hasn't fixed the problem.

    Windows 10 Tweaks

    Pressing “Windows+Pause Break” (it’s up there next to scroll lock) opens the “System” Window.

    Windows 10: In the new version of Windows, Explorer has a section called Quick Access. This includes your frequent folders and recent files. Explorer defaults to opening this page when you open a new window. If you’d rather open the usual This PC, with links to your drives and library folders, follow these steps:

    • Open a new Explorer window.
    • Click View in the ribbon.
    • Click Options.
    • Under General, next to “Open File Explorer to:” choose “This PC.”
    • Click OK

    Windows explorer crashing

    Hi,

    I am having the same problem as the OP in this thread.
    Windows Explorer crashes whenever I open my external HDD or thumb drive in explorer..

    I have tried the fixes listed in the above thread and I am getting the same error message as 'ktadie' (post 16). I think this is because I am running Windows 7 Professional. Windows explorer crashes when I open my 'Films' folder on my brand new 2tb external HDD. I have about 300 .avi files in this folder and some of the .avi files are several years old.

    In short I believe I need the same fix given by 'Wile E' (post 7) but updated for Windows 7 Professional.

    thats wierd... iv never had a large file crash explorer before....


    and i have files ranging upto 80GB...
