  1. File explorer "Group by name" acts differently on almost identical PCs

Two PC, both Windows 10, both latest version. Actually the 2nd computer is sort-of cloned, Windows was installed using MediaCreationTool20H2 created on PC 1.

So one would expect to see the same if the same folder on portable HDD is opened.

But there is a strange difference regarding grouped views:

File explorer "Group by name" on

    • First PC:
      3 groups starting with A-H
    • Second PC:
      4 groups starting with A-G

    Why is it different ?

    Can I change it ?

    :)

    @Ford
I don't think that step #3 is even needed. The probabiliy of two MD5 hashes from differing files colliding is what, 2^-128 ?
Even if your were hashing a million files the odds of a hash collision on differing files is astronomically small.

Makes sense to me. Sequential reading of a pair of arrays is fast (and of course, doesn't have to do an encryption algorithm even if the whole file is read).

In the last scenario, it probably would be even faster as the odds of two differing files being identical for the 1MiB is unlikely also and it would find the difference sooner.

Now get in there and optimize it more to make it even faster. *Big Grin File explorer "Group by name" acts differently on almost identical PCs :D

In a worse case scenario (let's say 5 files with a differing last byte) you would have to do full file reads 10 times for the array method, but only 5 hash runs and then do a hash List compare.
Seems in this case they would be a lot closer.

ACT Pro 2013 will not open in Windows 10

    Hi,

Thank you for posting in Microsoft Community.

The most likely causes on a standalone are a damaged or invalid .pad file or SQL is not running, or is damaged.

I suggest you to follow the steps below and check if the issue persists.

      • Click your Windows Start button, choose Run and type in actdiag.

      • When ACT! Diagnostics comes up, click Databases, the Database List.

      • Locate your database in the list, right-click on it and select Detach. Make sure you know the filepath to your database before detaching it.

      • When the database has been detached, open My Computer (or Windows Explorer) and browse to the location of your database.

      • Locate the .PAD file for your database [database name].pad and delete it.

      • Reopen ACT!...you will get a message that the last database opened cannot found, then will be taken to the Open Database dialog box.

      • At the bottom of this box, change the Files of Type to .adf, browse to the location of your database and double-click on the .adf file for your database.

      • You will get a message that ACT! will verify your database, click OK and ACT will reattach your database to SQL and create a new .pad file.

      • Hope this helps.
