Windows 10: File Explorer Keeps Crashing Despite Running CHKDSK – Need Help!

Hello,Recently, I encountered a problem on my PC with a corrupted local disk or something like that. By using the chkdsk command, I was able to fix it. Specifically, I ran the command like this: chkdsk /f /r /x, and it solved the issue.However, the problem came back later. I repeated the process, and it worked again. It happened again recently. This time, when I ran the command, it didn’t fix anything. I’ve tried running the command multiple times now, but the problem persists.It’s not exactly an error message I’m getting—it’s more like File Explorer keeps crashing.Any advice on how to solve

I did the steps you wrote. All the settings were as you suggested. The File Explorer keeps crashing.

 

File Explorer and NAS keep on crashing

Oh also, basically not only do they keep crashing but also File Explorer (on my windows PC the NAS is connected to and ofc its also connected to the router) is very slow to load any hard drives and goign into a drive's content takes a long long time and then it crashes again - - - Updated - - -

I have the Synology DS118. Not sure how to perform that command on it tbh

This problem may be a sign of hard-disk damage. When a file resides on a damaged area of the hard disk, Windows cannot access the file. When this occurs, the program crashes.

Let us try the following steps, and check if it helps.

Step 1: End the Windows Explorer process and create the new one.

• Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc, under Process tab, search for
  Windows Explorer.
• Right click on it and click on End task.
• Click on File in the Task Manager at top left corner of the window and select
  Run new task.
• Type explorer.exe and click on OK.
  

Step 2: Run the Chkdsk.exe program to try to recover files from any damaged areas of the disk. To do this, follow these steps:

• Press Windows + X keys.
• Click on Command Prompt (Admin) to bring up an elevated command prompt.
  
• In the command prompt type chkdsk /r and then press
  ENTER.
• Press Y, and then press ENTER.
• Restart your computer. During startup, Windows will scan your disk for errors, and Windows will try to recover any files that are located on damaged areas on the disk.

Disclaimer: While performing chkdsk
on the hard drive if any bad sectors are found on the hard drive, while the bad sectors might be recovered however there might be pertinent data loss.
